PostPost by: jono » Tue Mar 13, 2018 7:57 am

Derby Plating did not charge me ?500 per door frame.

If you ask them they will give you a quote. Simples

Most of my requirements have been satisfied. However, so that others may benefit, would it not be possible to have some sort of forum for the identification of sources for services and parts that members have experienced maybe with a section on how they rate that experience?
I think we all venture into the unknown at some time in this restoration pilgrimage, and weve all experienced "less than perfect" results. Soch a forum could cut our costs and improve our results.

Do me a favour Bob. We have seen over the years, many people complain about poor service or quality of work. When you ask them 'who' or 'what', to forewarn others, you never hear from them again, frightened of their own socks!

Some people have stood up to be counted, and well done to them, but in the main you are wasting your time.

Perhaps a clue or a hint of the companies who give poor service and/or quality of work would suffice rather than directly naming them here?

This topic does come up again and again..

lotus-chassis-f36/new-rear-bumpers-paul-matty-t36216.html

In the end, there are platers who can offer a very good 'finish', which they may call show finish, and that is what it is - show. However, if you want show and long term protection from the elements, you are going to have to pay for it. If your car is used in the dry, and garaged away in bad weather, I can understand why you baulk at paying double (and it will be) for a comprehensive job. Why should you? As an all weather user, I got stung by the 'show' finish, which barely lasted two years despite polishing & wax protection. The chromer blamed 'stone chips' - b*ll*cks.

Another front failed (same chromer, as I had the two done at the same time  ) as the 'show' chrome peeled away under stresses of being fitted. So I ended up paying nearly ?1000 to get a front bumper properly chromed (2 crap jobs and one proper job). An expensive lesson, but redeemed by finding a really good chromer (see thread), often recommended on this forum. A clue, if there is a waiting list, there is often something worth waiting for.

With regard to 'name and shame', they are/were based in Peterborough and were used by Spyder (who recommended them) in around 2008. I can't remember their name and have no idea if they are still in business.

You pays yer money...

With respect, are you sure? The website suggests they do and when I've been there I've seen chrome awaiting collection. Is the piece too big for them?
Speak to Keith there.

Plus 1 for Derby plating, not quick not cheap, but excellent work. Tatty front bumper ?400, tatty and dented rear bumper plus roof rails ?600, both prices plus vat. No association with them, just a satisfied customer.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine!

Mine's another vote for ACF Howell.

They did a fine job on my S3 SE, and on my old Lambrettas.

Speak to Mark, and say Tim the photographer recommended them.

My friend had a delay of a few months at Howells earlier this year, he was given a different excuse everytime he phoned! Got the bits back which were ok except door frame had suffered some damage.
