PostPost by: NYK » Fri Feb 09, 2018 6:49 pm

I?m sure this is a dumb question, but do all Plus 2 have chrome roof gutters? I?m restoring a ?72 130S that does not have any, should it?

So next questions, are all roofs and gutters the same? How are they fixed and are they still available?

I believe they are all the same and mine is screwed with what looks like small wood screws. Not sure if they are available or not.

Yes that is correct, but the early ones could be fitted to a later car.
There are two types shown in the parts list with a change date of Feb 1970

Ah . . . silence for that last question. Inquiring Plus 2 owners would like to know.

I will hazard a guess: no one is making them currently, so anything you find will be NOS or used. My go-to UK supplier of Lotus parts, SJ Sportscars, does not list this part.

Interesting that another "rare-as-hen's-teeth" part, the so-called moustache trim around the nose air intake, has been re-made, I believe. Perhaps it's not too much of a stretch to see the rain gutter trim being remade at some point. On the other hand, the early Plus 2 interior console has been MIA for decades.

You might consider filling the mounting holes, if you're doing bodywork/paint, so that you can run the car without, until such time as you find a set.

Regards,

Randy

Interesting discussion. Mine are aluminium and it's a 1973 car.

So I wonder if these came from another vehicle or were bespoke. Much of the bright-work was from other vehicles but maybe the door tops and gutters had to be purpose made?
Don't mention that you're prepared to pay a fortune for your roof gutters as you'll have lots of dodgy caravan dwellers offering to do the work for you before driving you to your nearest ATM for payment 8)

For the alloy versions, they might well be a standard extrusion piece, readily available and easily cut to length and easily bent to shape.

I have a 72 s130, it had the alloy type fitted when I bought it but one was damaged,I managed to get a pair of brass ones, however they were shorter, if you aligned them so they fitted flush with the rear of the roof, the curve at the front windscreen was shorter and exposed a securing hole where the original one was fitted, probably won't matter if you don't have any holes in the A post but mine has and is still exposed .

Thanks Phil, I see you are in Kent, do you mind me asking where about. You have the same year/variant as mine and it might be useful to see what various bits look like. I bought mine part restored so there are some details that I?m not familiar with.
