Hello folks
Has anyone out there got an ash tray for an Elan sprint available for sale?? Even just the front face for one? If not, any one any idea of the origins of the unit.. what car it was originally used on?
Thanks
Bob

They are not just Sprint, the one in my S3 coupe is the same.

Used by me for spare small nuts & bolts & fuses. :D

Hello Mark
I think it was a series of small things....I used TT uprated engine mounts, loosened an retightened the gear box mounts, wiggled it all a bit, and bingo, centralised! The gearlever gaiter is a bugger tho, its on, located in its original position, but 2 and 4 are tight at the rear of the centre panel. I'm going to have another look at it soon. Thanks for the info!

Hi Bill,
I am prepared, tho it will be a wrench, to swop you my favourite bitsa jam jar for your ash tray.... this is a one time once in a blue moon offer, never to be repeated..........

Cheers both
Bob

In the S1, S2, Coupe parts book, pg 125 is listed an ash tray p/n ARH 189 and bracket, ash tray mounting
p/n 36 B 560 only for the coupe, so there is no source listed for the one piece and the other is unique to the coupe at that time.

I must admit that ARH 189 is in the form of a BMC # and there is no code for a BMC # on pg 2 in the front of the book, so maybe from an Austin saloon???

Hello Roger
There is no bracket associated with the ash tray in my car (Sprint) the ash tray rear screws straight to the dash board, you can see the holes in the photo. So this must be the "no source listed" one! Goodness knows what happened to my original which was stripped out in the seventies and moved home in pieces six times in the intervening years!
All info is good info, thanks
Bob

Bob,

Your photo shows 2 pieces, the ahtray itself w/ the black krinkle finish painted front and the bracket that is chrome and is actually screwed to the dash.

Got my curriosity now. The new (all models) parts book only shows one number for the ashtray, the assembly is
026 B 6029. The new book though does not show sources for items sourced by Lotus from other manufacturers.

I needed on of these ashtrays and contacted a wrecker specializing in "old" cars here in New Zealand (called Horopito motors). I indicated that the ashtray was originally from a Austin A55 Cambridge and sent them the photos of the two variants from Brian's book. They did find me one, the wider type as shown in Bob's picture, but they said it was from a Vauxhall EIP (Velox). Maybe both cars used this ashtray, or perhaps the Austin had the narrow ashtray and the Vauxhall the wider one.

Anyway that may be an alternative source should the others not succeed.

There is 2 different types of Ash tray (early and later versions), see link
lotus-chassis-f36/correct-ashtray-for-elan-t20812.html

Also they all came with the black front vinyl wrapped, if it's been painted then some one has removed the vinyl as i believe they were only available in vinyl Black or sand colour (+2)

The pictures look suspiciously like those in Brian Buckland's book.

That link has some interesting discussion about different ashtrays and which series they were fitted to.
I have a 71 sprint with the 'earlier' ashtray and no reason to believe it wasn't original as I've had the car since 82.
I'm not sure about vinyl wrapping as the Buckland photos are both painted.
They come up beautifully with crinkle spray.
So I reckon that Bob can fit anything period that fits!
