How to attach letters for the front number plate.

PostPost by: 1owner69Elan » Sat Dec 30, 2017 4:29 pm

I restored my individual front grill numbers/letters from http://www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk/.

I am in California where I should be using a proper California front plate, but they generally ignore my UK plates (I brought the car back from the UK in 1969).

Ash at Tippers was quite helpful to get a match with my original back plate (which is mounted under my CA plate).

Cost was 17.5 pounds plus shipping for the seven digits.

Hi Richard
I got numberplate letters from
http://numberplates-4-u.co.uk/

He also made me an alloy rear number plate, he was at the Classic car show at the NEC at Birmingham.

Cheers
Simon

White letters and numbers are readily available in UK, but I suspect that unless you paint your own, Tippers are likely to be the best source for silver.
Silver on black plates are UK legal but I'm not sure that un-backed silver digits are
Happy as ever to be proved wrong of course!

Just an aside - I ve found the nicest digits are the aluminium ones made by Hills but they are increasingly hard to find thesedays.

Alan, who supplies them in France as I?d rather have aluminium than plastic numbers. Do they have a website?

In France for the alloy letters "BELLES ANCIENNES PLAQUES".
When you order you will need to send attached copy of the V5 so they can see the reg number.
The letters are "PRESTIGE"

Alan,

Do you know the make of the Ali digits and whether they are the required UK size?

The supplier and manufacturer is as above. Each letter is 6?.
The Font is for France but i do not think that will be a problem in UK. They are very close to UK font and it is not obvious that they are very slightly different.
If you have been stopped by the Police i don't think it will be to measure exactly the size of the letters.
If you have been stopped maybe it could be to say that you should have a proper number plate. With the help of Club Lotus you can prove letters in the grill are legal.
The alloy letters have little pegs on the back so they can be attached like the plastic letters with a clip.
I prefer the alloy because they don't break.

In most parts of the USA, the law won't give you any trouble over foreign plates or numbers as long as the US-state plate is clearly visible in the proper place. In states that only require rear plates, you can do whatever you want up front. I live in a rear-plate-only state, which is good because Yelotus, despite being a federal car, lived in the UK for the first year and still has numbers from then (and a 1971 tax disc too!) which I do want to preserve.

Gregg,

I sent you a PM today with the details of who I bought my numbers and letters from.

I think "Framptons" supply plastic letters as original or at least they used to.

Thank you all. evidently, there are more than one source for the numbers and letters. Wouldn't have found them without this group.

Happy New year to all.
