Elan S3 badge

PostPost by: Dieschelan » Thu Nov 30, 2017 12:16 pm

Hi

I'm looking for the correct badges for my Elan S3 dhc standard model. My car was built in Novembre 1966. The car actually has not badges. Muy question is where is the correct location of the badges (front or rear wing)? And which is the correct badge? I know in the upper front wing should have the Elan badge.

It should have a 1965 Indy badge one side, and a 1963-65 World Champ badge, the other side. Not sure which side, because think it changed. I think my pre-airflow coupe is opposite to my SS dhc, but its apart in process of restoration. They should both be the smallish Rootes type badge. Then you should have the five letters spelling L O T U S across the back edge of the boot lid.

OPPS, I forgot to mention the location. On early dhc's the shield badge should be on the front wing, down somewhat maybe midway up from the bottom of the door opening and about midway between the front wheel arch and the door front edge.

You are correct on the "Elan" script badge just above the door opening.

Thank you Roger for the answer. My car has only the Lotus letters in the boot. About the location, I don't know If my car is an early model and should have the badges in the front wings. My car was built in Novembre 1966 (45/6529).

As usual with Lotus, pinning down exactly when certain changes occurred in times when new models were being introduced, but as a single instance my S3 left the factory in January 1967 has badges on the front wings as S2. This seems to be quite unusual for a S3, but are definitely correct as the original metal inserts used for fixing are present.
The Elan badge on the upper wing should be accompanied with S/E if you have that spec car.

You may be able to pull back the carpet in the footwell to see where filler was used to cover the holes, if you determine your car should have badges behind the front wheels. The little Rootes badge shields have 3 pins to attach them to the body panel. You can easily see if there is any evidence of badges being on the rear flanks by looking inside the boot, but I think your car is not late enough to have badges on the rear flanks.
