Can anyone give me some advice on sourcing and fitting the black trim that is glued to the upper part of the windscreen frame on small Elans? Do you just cut this to size yourself and glue in place before fitting the windscreen rubber? A fellow Elan restorer suggested using small size grey pipe central heating foam insulation for the padding underneath.

It has been posted here before. Here are some pictures of orginal trim removed. I used the orginal as pattern to trace new material (same as I used on door cards) then stuck it down just at the edges I did not use foam, it worked great and looks OEM.

i have to make the same job; did you keep the trace size or something to use as trace in order to cut a new vinil in the correct shape... Thank you.

I did this,too. If I remember, I cut the insulation in half, length-wise, so it was a 'half circle'.

If you look closely at the pictures,you will see I layed the trim piece on a tiled floor with the middle of the strip lined up as a datium in the middle and top of the joint of 12? tiles.
The floor is all 12? tiles. (Grid) the measurements and thickness of the strip is provived,
I did this for reference for any one wanting to reproduce could work out the shape and come up with a pattern.

The one piece of advice I will give you is ?do NOT put foam behind the strip? just glue one side let it dry and gently streatch the remaining side of the strips.
It turns out perfect, while the foam sounds like a good idea, resist the urge to use It. I tried it first, and it was ?bulgy? (if that is a word). The orginal strip I removed did not have form backing, and will all due respect it looks better without it.

i don't have the trim; previous owner removed it. so i don't have anything to refer to.

SMS did mine, they just used black vinyl with a piece of grey pipe insulation underneath.. Works a treat!
