request paper template of grill opening

PostPost by: mini64 » Wed Aug 11, 2010 3:12 am

A bit more then the average "help" here - was wondering if someone could trace a paper template of the grill opening - maybe place some newspaper up against it and rub the outline with a pencil on its side so that it marks the contour? Then send me the result. I'm afraid the body I am restoring has had the lower half of the opening eaten away. Thats right- eaten! Previous owner thought by rabbits or raccoons.

Failing this maybe a straight on photo uploaded to here that I could print out to full scale.

Hi Andrew,
Don't know if you can scale off the attached pic.
The outline is of the inner lip - ie drawn onto board placed inside the grille opening. Photo is of one half only to show more detail and the two datum lines are the vertical centre line and the widest point.

Hope this helps

Best regards,

Edit....Added the head-on photo

Andrew,

Which Bryan are you in? Mapquest has one nr College Station and another north of Dallas?

How soon do you need to fix this? At what stage is your restoration? We had a nice visit at Buchanan Lake last winter and may escape Ohio again this winter. I could bring tracings on cardboard or maybe something better, depending on how much room I have. At minimum, you need a tracing of front and rear of the opening to get the draft angle.

Do you have a photo of the damage?

Roger #1 - Thanks! Let me draw up those coordinates and see how it looks. MAy be just what I need.

Roger #2 - I'm in the bryan near college station. I appreciate the offer but I hope to be near the end of bodywork before winter.

Another request related to the opening.

Does anyone have a template for the metal screen grille?

My car doesn't have one, and I would like to make a replica out of stainless.

regards,
Tim

More of my lame searches on google

I put this in the search box

elan grill site:www.lotuselan.net/forums

and I got this htm

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=elan+grill+site%3Awww.lotuselan.net%2Fforums&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=CnaDv841pTMvsEpXcygTKj7DICgAAAKoEBU_Qgwid

so I looked and remembered that I posted this one

http://www.lotuselan.net/forums/elan-f14/elan-radiator-inlet-grills-t18265.html

Brian remembered it too so now I am being boring I guess.

Anyhow I didn't use a tape measure with the photos above so I took a couple of new ones. I think they are full size and if you copy and print you should be as close as lotus ever was. If you don't get a 24 x 5 inch grill than bring the photo into an editor and adjust until you do.
