Anybody answer me this. Were Elans fitted with rear view mirrors that attached to the tie bar? If so which car were they from? Or were they just glued to the windscreen?

S1's and S2's were attached with two screws to the top of the windscreen frame, S3's and S4's DHC were mounted to the tensioning bar and all Coupes were mounted to the center front portion of the roof.

Thanks for that. Most cars I have seen have the glued on mirror, was this standard as production tailed off?

As for the ones on the tie bar were they from MGB's?

if it is of any use. I went to a lot of trouble to obtain a mirror that attaches to the central tensioning rod.
When I first drove the car, I couldn't see a thing in the mirror due to it vibrating so much.
Result a Halfords suction pad mirror on the windscreen!

I recently bought a new mirror to fit on the tensioning rod. Only source I could find was a company who specialised in MG's and it is an MGB replacement unit. Looks close to my original (though God knows where that came from).
Yep - it vibrates a bit but functionally it does the job. Move it up the rod as far as you can to keep vibration to a minimum, or go with a mirror that glues to the screen.

I fitted an MGB/Midget mirror to the tensioning rod and to cure the vibration I supaglued a bicycle brake block to the back. I cut it so it was just oversize for the gap between the mirror bracket and the windscreen.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a proper windscreen tensioner for my S2 roadster? Mine was equiped with what appears to be a 20 inch bicycle spoke, but I spent a few hours today going around to bike shops and none of them had a spoke long enough....

Did this eliminate the vibration well enough to read a number plate of the car behind or to see whether the driver of the car behind is a looker or not? I can barely tell what type of car it is and what gender is driving, mine is so bad!

Mine came from the factory glued to the windscreen.

Mine too...same as Europa mirror.

I think you will find that it is an automobile spoke rather than a bicycle product. I replaced mine recently by going to a chap who restores MGs and ferreting around in a box holding various sized spoke adjusters until I found the correct sized thread. I achieved this by taking a bolt of the same size and thread as the spoke as a sample. A shop overhauling spoked wheels would be a good place to start.

My S4 also came from the factory with the mirror glued to the winshield.
Seperate note that it also did not have any sunvisors fitted.

Bought my car in 1980, had this mirror attached to the tension bar.
