This looks similar. Not sure about the measurements though.

Yes that is the sort of thing that I think is being suggested.
However the problem for me is there is no chrome insert of any kind being used and personally think it will look rather plain and not quite right without some chrome, plastic or otherwise, in the surround of the windscreen.

Hi all
I fitted a screen to my plus S130 1971 around 25 years ago using a screen rubber from "Woolies", they still stock them in various upper and lower dimension slots. Its a long time ago I think how I fitted it was to fit the seal around the glass without any angled joints super glue the joint at the top middle of the screen, Then I filled the body recess with adhesive and placed screen in and locked it position with duct tape. left it a few days to harden so I could remove the screen to check the bond. it was fine then, put the screen back in with liquid soap to finally fit the chrome filler.
I have even replaced the screen again some time later after road damage did not have to reset the bonded rubber trim.
Good luck

Thanks for the info....Food for thought!
Just to recap the problem as we all know is replacing a bonded screen with a rubber seal with some sort of chrome trim and the best way of doing it if indeeed it is possible on all the later +2's.
So was there an upstand to fit the rubber over along the bottom of the aperture on your S130?....That appears to be the main problem. The upstand or lack of one along the bottom aperture to accept a rubber. Some cars seem to have this upstand and others do not it seems.
My own ssue is that at some future date I will have to replace my screen which is wiper blade scratched and I also want to replace the headlining so I am trying to get all my ducks in a row so to speak before taking the bonded screen out.
If push comes to shove I will just have to get on with it and struggle with the challenge of rebonding a new screen in but I am not looking forward to it at all, dealing with the plastic/chrome trim and possible crinkling of it whilst trying to make it fit.
So if there is a way of doing it with a rubber seal, forgoing originality, but with a bit of chrome trim bling then I am all for going down that route.

I'm replacing the front windscreen at the moment. My windscreen has the wide chrome trim, with an "T" shaped insert, which has a short "L" shaped flange at the bottom of the "T"
I've just received a new front screen rubber from Sue Miller.
I also order a fitting tool, and what I've got is a handle with a lock screw, and a total of 8 implements, attached pic.
The 4 diamond shaped heads seem to be for fitting plastic seal strips, but what are the other "hooks" for ?
I last fitted the windscreen many years ago, without any instructions, and with great difficulty as I remember.
So I'm hoping to get some good advice for the most suitable procedure before I dive in again.
Thanks !

The tool you have shown in your photo is a general windscreen trim fitting tool. Not specific at all to Lotus and is used for fitting the windscreens and trims of a multitude of different screens in umpteen different manufacturers vehicles.
You just use whichever adaptor suits the fitting of the chrome trim you are fitting to what car.
As you have already identified the different diamond shaped adaptors are for different manufacturers central rubber chrome insert locking type of chrome trim, ideal for doing a +2 rear screen plastic chrome insert and other similar classic Triumph/Mini type rubber fitting screens and plastic chrome inserts. I don't think any of these diamond shaped adaptors will be of much use to you fitting your +2 model of front screen trim.
The other adaptors I have no idea really. I personally would just use whichever of the other 'L' shaped adaptors suit and help you to ease the style of trim you have into the rubber seal.

Well now I'm ready to fit the new windscreen to my Plus 2S.
The last few times I've done this, I've fitted the glass and weather strip first, then inserted the "T" shaped chrome trim with a rubber hammer and soap.
However, this time I've just checked the official Lotus manual and it advises that the weather strip AND chrome trim should be fitted before fitting the windscreen into the opening, then proceed with the cord in the groove method.
No mention of fitting tools.
Which methods have people used, and how did it go ?

This is an interesting way forward, and if as Alan say it can be achieved on a car that lacks the upstand at the bottom it would be a fix; did you car have the upstand? I am inferring not, but would like to be sure?
Thanks
James
Thanks

Hi
there is no upstand at the bottom but there is room to bond it in place.
It's been in my car a long time no leaks, sorry I cannot give more info or photos
Have a go good luck

As I understand it what John is saying is that although there is no lip at the bottom he bonded the rubber to the lower aperture and then fitted the screen.
Unsure how I personally feel about the screen not having a rigid structure to hold a rubber in place at the bottom but John says doing it this way has been very successful for him so fair play.
It does though completely change the look of how the screen is in a later car and the rubber looks to be not quite wide enough in the corners from what I can see. It is a judgement call only you can make if you don't fancy struggling with the original type of bonding fitment.
I am sitting on the fence at the moment, just fishing for what I think is the best solution. I have a useable if somewhat scruffy screen/trim in my car (+2S130) so no great rush for me!

Hi Alan, I guess that in John’s method it’s not so much different from bonding the whole screen, but has the advantage of the glass being further contained in the rubber with the filler strip. My only question is how it can sit flush at the bottoms where the upstand is missing - unless one were to cut the part of the rubber that would normally sit the other side of it? Hope that makes sense!

Hi James,
Yes I know what you mean about how the rubber would sit?.....Just thinking aloud now and wondering if it would be possible to say cut a relief section along the bottom of the rubber, at the inside bottom edge to give the rubber a sort of shelf for it to sit flat and level along the aperture edge?
That's the best i can come up with for now...
Perhaps the real answer is to just forget all these alternatives and instead take a deep breath and pluck up the courage on a hot summer day to make the trim all nice an floppy and easier to shape and to bond it in as it was originally!
Alan.
