external mirrors

Many of the various external mirrors supplied for our cars have a plastic, often white, section around the mirror itself
and which holds the glass in place in its frame.
Then , while the rest of the mirror remains pristine, the plastic cracks, bits fall off and the entire device is rendered useless!
Some have used a polyester or silicon filler to permanently stick the glass in place, but with some styles this limits any later adjustment.
Has anyone sourced a supply of the plastic section?

Hi Bill......When I bought my car, the mirrors were a mess....all the plastic / nylon stuff had broken up and was falling out....I looked everywhere for months and never found a source.....my mirrors are some "no-name" brand, but even the known brands for these kinds of mirrors there was nothing I could find. This may not help you, but I had some parts 3D printed.....I did my best to replicate the dimensions, created the CAD file, and had them printed through a sevice online. They came out ok....I can't see anything in the mirrors anyway, but at least they are not all falling apart anymore.

I'd give you a copy of the print file, but unless your mirrors are the same dimensions as mine, it won't help you much. If you want to take some basic dimensions off your mirrors and send them to me, I'll compare them to mine and see if they are comparable....maybe even revise the file a bit if needed......just a thought.....

Aardvark has the original Talbot Berlin Jr. Mirrors for the Elan. They also carry parts for the mirros.

I will phone Aardvark and see if they use the plastic section.
Otherwise I shall use a silastic type solution.
And as to the utility of mirrors, the one opposite my driver's side had its base aligned with the window frame and would pick up nothing whatever of interest.
The upper part holding the mirror attached to the base with one bolt accessible once the mirror assembly was removed, and with one locating stud.
I eventually used a small round file to turn the bold hole in the upper part into a slot so that when replaced on the base the angle "in" of the upper part was considerably increased.
I could then see from the drivers seat what was in the adjacent lane and the fix was completely invisible.
