An Elan that I restored in 2012 is up on Bring A Trailer.

I was very surprised when the car did not meet reserve. I think it is a very nice car. Perhaps because it is RHD?

Perhaps because the dealer is greedy and put too high a reserve on it. $36k seems quite good for a non-Sprint Elan.

I was surprised by the low final bidding, too, I expected more after sales of the last 6 months. I guess RHD might have some impact on size of market, at least, but for those who don't mind I don't think it comes with any material discount. RHD for these cars, due to their size, is a total non-issue for use in the US, in my opinion (and experience with my RHD Seven).
I suspect that the overall car market has slowed a bit as all the stimulus $ of the last few years, and the resulting financial frenzy, is taking its toll on the economy. There isn't a huge market for our cars anyway, so I think we see even small variations - at least on a given day for a certain car.

I have to disagree, early cars fetch big money as well, especially Zog's awesome restorations... look at the quality of the paint & interior etc. I was expecting $45,000 plus, but you have to have the right bidders in the room...

That is surprising. I think a middle of the run Early elan is going for 40k$ ish in the US. This one is much nicer than average and thought it would be more in the 50K range.
Seems like there just wasn't enough serious bidders. Hard to know why but not sure how much RHD impacted it, I'd think a lot of buyers would be wise enough to over look any concerns on RHD to get a car of this quality at that kind of price.

What a great looking car, in fabulous condition, although rear ride height and resulting rake looks wrong.

HELP BIG TIME.
My lovely S3SE dhc has been written off by the insurers as it has been submerged in dirty water along with the house. They will not let me keep the salvage.
Therefore I am looking for a replacement S3 DHC.

Hi TBG
That is a great shame. Unfortunately I believe that the insurers will send your car to a salvage auction where it will be bought by a dealer who will either resell it for repair or strip it for parts.
I suggest you put your enquiry in the `wanted or needed` forum of this website. See top line of this page.
Best of luck in your search,
Eric in Burnley

Hi again.
Please will you tell us who your insurer is so that we can avoid them.

Very sorry to hear of the loss of your car. It must be heartbreaking!
To retain salvage in the event of a classsic car write off in the UK you usually have to pay an extra premium to your insurance company to get 'Salvage retention'.
With Salvage retention you get full payout to whatever your agreed valuation is and also the vehicle salvage in the event of a write-off.
I pay extra to Lancaster Insurance for just this write off scenerario on my +2. Other insurance companies in the classic car insurance business also do things this way.

Yes - I have retention on mine that would have worked in the event of an accident but not if it has been submerged in "Black Water" - ie sewage and so on, the insurance lot worry about disease and so on down the line and are adamant that I cannot keep it. Bugger, D

Oh dear...That doesn't sound right to me!
If you have salvage retention on your policy you would think you were covered wouldn't you for all circumstances pertaining to the car being written off.
I am certainly going to read the small print of my salvage retention policy now!
Alan.
