I do love an early Plus 2 - they look so much nicer with the 'clean' nose and the simple dash and interior. Closer to the Elan in concept

I know of 15 earlier cars that are still extant. I have a note that it was for sale as a complete restoration project in 2014, when it was silver and had been stored stored since 1986. It was invoiced at the end of October 1967.

For that money I'd want the original bits and colours re-instated, and the right windscreen surround! Does have the right rear lights though...but that rear bumper is so wrong!

Right windscreen surround? I thought that was correct for a pre-'S' car?

The early cars used the Consul Capri stainless steel surrounds. This was replaced after a 100 or so cars were built as Ford destroyed the tooling for the surrounds just before the Plus 2 was launched, so stock wasn't readily available. It was replaced by the plastic chrome infill as on this car and the 2 seat Elans.

When the 'S' was launched, the first lot of those also had the early stainless steel surrounds, presumably from a supply of stock found or accumulated by Lotus. That stock didn't last long, and the surround replaced with the large chrome plastic 'cover' when the screens started to be bonded in.

You can see the wider surrounds on this photo from the launch brochure.

I completely agree with you. I know that not all the the later cars have them by any means but the bonnet bulge is not for me either.
