Wow, that is really nice. My Sprint is also a January '72 issue and it's interesting to see the
Federal vs non with this example.

Original? The paint looks great, the doors fit, the gaskets (and most of the engine bay) all look new.

Surely the result of a complete relatively recent restoration?

A discerning buyer will see through the write up on this car. But if it sells for £65k then I had better get my proper original low mileage Sprint revalued  . Jim

Just been on - briefly - “Harry’s garage” YouTube Silverstone auctions edition. About 33 minutes in.

He thinks Elans are on the up !

Would have preferred Steve Soper's 2019 26R build he recently sold......

does anyone know if Steve Soper's Elan was a genuine 26R or GTS spec car? For a mere GBP 175K it ws either an expensive GTS or bargain priced 26R

Vaughan, he writes that it was built from scratch. It does not have what would be a 26R correct small Lotus Components VIN plate. I would therefore assume it to be a GTS.

Sold for 65,250 pounds. Strong money.

The Sprint not the GTS.

I wasn’t online for the auction, but oddly high prices like this at auction are usually because two folk with relatively deep pockets wanted the same object.

It does not mean all excellent Sprints are now worth this amount - yet!

Tim, I spoke to Silverstone about this Elan, they told me to expect a premium due to Steve Soper owning it but also because of it's originality.... when i asked in what way?? they said apart from cosmetic paintwork, new hood and some recommissioning work etc by Paul Matty it still had the original chassis, Body, Running gear etc!! when i asked was this a good thing not having a new Chassis?? the guy said i bet you can count "original Elans" on two hands let alone with such low documented miles!!

To be honest it's the first time i've heard "Originality" being sold as a bonus on a Lotus but was a matter of time before the numbers matching premium hit Elans or at least being pushed as a bonus.

JimE, I'd get your car valued by Silverstone for interest ;)

I wonder how many original chassis are still extant. Silverstone is saying ten or less. Many times a replacement chassis, a reinforced (26R type) chassis, or a Spyder conversion are touted as added value when selling an Elan.

I do have an original, no rust, chassis. But, the car lives in a benign environment and has always been garaged. More challenging locales, damp including with salt on the roads, certainly lead to the lack of viability and scarcity of original chassis. So, I wonder worldwide if there are really only ten or so original chassis (on a roadworthy Elan) and if that scarcity/originality really is as highly valued as Silverstone states.

I don't think i was talking to the Lotus Specialist, he was a salesman trying to big it up.

Not really a huge shock collectors look for originality, from past experience it's Collectors that bring the big money (i don't think you will see that being sold on by a dealer)
