Lotus Elan

Early +2 with a flip front

PostPost by: Spyder fan » Sat Nov 14, 2020 3:06 pm

Here's a strange one on UK Ebay. At first glance appears to be an early +2, but at some stage in it's life it has gained a sort of Triumph Herald style flip front.
The seller describes it as not being a project for a few weekends, and drive off to the pub.

£7000 asking price, any takers?

What they've done to it is very sad but the front fibreglass should be ok to repair and put back to original.....

£7 seems rather steep unless the engine has been rebuilt properly, it doesn't look like it and it's a Stromberg cylinder head without the Stromberg bonnet!

I was sent a link to this car of Facebook a few months ago by a friend who knew I was after an early Plus 2 - it was advertised without an engine and gearbox (I don't do FB). A soon as I saw the flip front abortion I immediately lost interest.

It then came up on Ebay and IIRC it went for £2400.

Now it's up again with a 'magic' engine and just as un appealing to my mind and eye

I'm so glad I held out and eventually got what I now have.

Impressive tree trunk front support, what happened to add lightness?

These seem to be the wheels...

and this looks remarkably like the engine...

Unfortunately a Plus 2 that has been stuffed around is worth more in bits than as a complete car still :( not sure how a Stromberg engine ended up in the non Stromberg bonnet car but with Lotus all is possible

cheers

This +2 is/was unit 050/0135, per the earlier eBay advert and was assembled with engine number LP9945LBA. It was invoiced on 12.15.1967. I would guess that the Stromberg head was an addition to the seller's Lotus parts collection.

Some may remember a complete yellow +2 for sale this time last year for around £12k? , it did not sell so was broken for spares---- it is the same seller-- gemini kev.
Its sad chassis 135 is as it is , more so to lose another early car if broken .
Out of interest does anyone have current data on survival numbers up to chassis 150 ?
