Lotus Elan

My First Elan S3 DHC SS For Sale.

PostPost by: elans3 » Sun Jul 12, 2020 6:33 pm

My first Elan S3 DHC SE SS on the market for the first time in a while.
One I bitterly regret selling back in November 2003.
Highly specced from new, with the close ratio gearbox & 3.55 diff, it was a cracker, go-anywhere car.
At that time 17 years ago, it was still unusually on the original chassis, which was in pretty good nick.
Bought it at the Donington Lotus Show 18 months before, after prowling the car park for one for sale. Best standard Elan I ever had.

May I ask was the close ratio (2.5/1 on 1st) box an original fitment? I believed that my April '67 was one of the last S3 to be offered with that option. Do you know when your old car was built?

As far as I know from previous owners it was fitted as OE. From memory it was registered August '67 (hence the F reg.) So it could have been sold as a kit, (believe it was ), and the delay was build time.

I also have a 1967 , F plate S3 SS DHC Elan that was sold with the spec of the 3.5 ratio diff and 2.5 / 1 first gear .

With a tuned motor, I think it's the best combination for an Elan.

I'd agree entirely.

May I ask if these cars with C/R boxes where 6 or 4 bolt crankshaft engines, engine numbers would be very helpful, if possible.

Can't help with an engine number, but I would have thought that the vast majority of surviving ELAN 's would have been a 6-bolt crank, as mine was.
I'm obviously aware that some early Cortina's had that 2.5 first gear box too.

To my surprise I found that my April '67 car was one of the first hundred Elan's fitted with six a bolt crank.
