Lotus Elan

Plus 2 in Stockton

PostPost by: jono » Sun Jun 07, 2020 11:40 am

Does anyone know anything about this car - apparently sold by Matty in 2012?

I've an itch for another project. Clearly the interior is wrong for a 1970 +2S as is the servo. There must be a 'history' to it, perhaps a re shell at some point?

Nice looking interior - must have been re trimmed, surely?

Mazzini - your 'patch' ISTR, do you know anything about it or the seller (seems to like E types too?)

Cheers guys and thanks for your good wishes.

I've never been away to be honest :D

Still bobbing in and got to within a whisker of buying Dave's S4 project a few weeks ago - a bit of regret I didn't but I'm a Plus 2 man at heart and still have a spare TC engine a box looking for a home!

Well it certainly needs some tlc and would definitely be a project !
The interior although looking good is from an early car, and like you say is wrong for the year and that vynil roof is horrible.
Having said all that if you already have an engine and gearbox it could fit your requirements perfectly and would make a good project base it seems depending on what it finally goes for?
After 30bids I see it is at £4100 although it does say reserve not met!

Good Luck if you go for it!

Well it's at £6,200 and reserve not met - someones having a laugh for a car which is wrong and has no engine and gearbox.

As they would say on Dragon's Den - 'I'm out' :D

For me it's a Plus 2 and not a "S" car. The Servo is correct for a Plus 2. The Dashboard is Plus 2 and the Interior.
It has had a new front section because of the Spot/Fog Lamps from a car or made after 1971.
Maybe one of the last Plus 2 Elans. Would be good to see if Boot is cable release or like early Plus 2 car a Handle.

Hmm...

The body is a full "S" as far as I can see - front fogs, center exhaust and no boot handle/lock, door locks etc.

The interior is full pre-S - other than the doors which have the "S" door furniture.

The servo changed half way through the S production so that is not helpful either way.

Do you know the chassis number?

Center Exhaust was also on Plus 2 model.
I had a 1968 Plus 2 with center Exhaust and Boot had handle to open.

I am confident it is later "pre s" model like mine, which has the S exhaust, door handles etc. I think the switch was around serial 700, but I don't have my notes with me. Coincidentally, my car also says S on the logbook!

I think this must have been later than 700. Mine, 864, definitely had no "S" stuff. I guess that at the changeover there might have been extra Early interiors in stock that were used on the first "S" bodies.

Of course this is not mentioned in the parts list which insists on a clean transfer at 928/929 - but then why is that a surprise :?

If the car did not have the rest of the "S" body features (fog lights, boot release, door locks etc.) then I guess the most likely explanation is that the boot floor was replaced - either due to damage or for aesthetics.

I was out by a 200. See excerpt from the workshop manual. Bit blurred but they show the changes took place after serial no 856 usa and 928 rest of the world. It is possible this car is one of the last pre S models sold in the UK, which like mine, was originally for the States, but then sold in the UK as a kit. My car is number 2192, which is after the S was released. Apart from the fog lights, which could have been added later, this car looks very similar spec to mine. The wiring looks to have been butchered, but it only has the two fuse electrics and early dash so despite when the ad says, it is not an "S"

For me it is as i said a Plus 2 with a correct Plus 2 Dash and Interior.
I am sure it has had a front with the later light mouldings.
On +2S cars of that year they had holes cut for the lights and plastic mouldings to house them. Also +2S cars of that year had 4 fuse boxes.

Well someone really must want this car regardless of the questionable spec and not having engine and gearbox!
With one day to go it is now at £8100!

With less than a day on this UK eBay listing and over $10K USD, I thought I'd throw out some thoughts about it.

I see this car as a domestic 1969 +2, (not a +2S) that was in somebody's inventory on 12.31.69 and was then marketed, sold and registered as a 1970 unit.

As was noted, the interior items are clearly of an early style unit, i.e., the seats and the dash board. The early +2s were produced right up to the end of 1969. The changes made at Units 0857/0929 (Apr '68) were made to comply with 1968 USDOT regulations (including flat interior door handles & rocker switches vs. toggle switches), rather than the "S" variant which came at Unit 1593 (Mar '69).

From 1.1.70, only "S" variants were produced. The "S" variant's most distinguishing feature is that the "S" variant dashboard/facia has 6 small gauges, whereas this one has only 4.

Cheers...
