Very rare Escort Lotus Twin Cam Block ! This is a bare L Block with a "J" prefix designated for the Escort Twin Cam with desirable square main caps & rear dip stick but can be used in other applications ( the Elan obviously has the dip stick in the front cover ) . I would recommend fitting liners to bring it back to standard bore ( or any bore you want ) . £495 .

Prefer collection .... more parts to list soon !

What are the cylinder diameters now?

Are you able to post a picture of the underside please?

Hi Hal ... here`s a picture of underneath ... I don`t know the present diameter of the bores ( I`ll try & get somebody competent to measure them ) but I`m told they won`t bore again , so liners are recommended ... I was quoted £300 approx all in supplied & fitted .

Btw., I`m still on the look out for a 701M block / engine :-) .

Cheers ,

Paul .

Thanks Paul - yep, it certainly looks the part and a good price!

Two flies in the ointment so far - distance and a quick call to a chap locally who specialises in Cosworths tells me that he is not keen on re-lining blocks. There is another outfit who are off the scale up market in these things who quoted me a minimum of 1000€ to line bore a block  but I have a call out to them.

It sounds like you are bored out to 83.5 minimum - do you know what the actual condition is like? It could be, he says wishfully, it was recently bored and just needs a de-glaze... but probably not!

Why are you looking for a 701 if you have this one? Or are you making something that must be precise? I will have a complete engine with a 701 block once I build this new engine. I could take a risk I guess that the new build will work out and release the existing engine - complete or in components - early. I will give it a thought.

Hi Hal ,

I think having liners fitted over here is not a big deal ... the block isn`t "fresh" , so I would treat it as needing liners ... but then it would make a super block for whatever application ... maybe even an Escort Evocation/Tribute Car ... or just leave it as it is , as a lovely piece of "garage art" ;-) !

You might remember from our previous communications , that I need a later 701M block for my 1972 Sprint ... I also have a Q420 spec` 681 Twin Cam ( again too early for my Sprint ) , stripped for inspection at Nick Stagg`s at the moment , that could be available ....

Cheers ,

Thanks Paul - thinking it all over, I will continue with my plan to use a new 1600 FF block from Ford Racing. My project was based on using new parts for the build, but took a hit when I perhaps overspent in taking a head from John Wilcox, so that now I am looking at ways to compensate! I can find the extra from somewhere.

As to your 701 block - when do you want it and what is your budget? There is I believe, one new 701M block in the UK at present. QED have been trying to sell it to me, but at £2,875 against a 1600 FF at £1,500, I just cannot justify it. But with the quality you put into your builds, might suit...

O.K. Hal ... I`m in no particular rush , with no particular budget ... my Sprint already has a lovely uprated Twink in it ... it`s just the OCD in me , that would like it to have the correct 701M block ... so , I just keep a look out for a suitable complete Big Valve Engine , or just a block ... & like you say new 701M blocks are available !

Keep me posted :-) .

Really this block is most suited for the Ford Escort Lads , so I`ve put it on ebay for their attention ....

I`m open to offers on my other spares :-) .
