Would this s/wheel be the correct OE for an early pre airflow S3 ?
Thanks
Thanks

Think it is correct for an early pre-airflow but probably would have had a yellow & green hornpush rather than than the black type......

Your wheel is an S2 item - an Elan 1600 / S1 wheel has a riveted wood rim - yours appears to be from an S2.
The black horn push was introduced post S2 - should be the normal green/yellow pre S3

Sorry Bill not entirely correct there. The riveted or studded grip was only on really early S1's. By 1964 the spoke configuration were as shown in the sellers photos, with machined grips. These then carried over into the 'S1.5' and S2.

I stand corrected - to a point; I purchased my Elan 1600, 26/0538 from the factory in Dec.1963, It was shipped to me in March 1964. So I 'spose the riveted SW must have been abandoned later that year (the introduction of the S 1 1/2 ??).
There are only the following 4 models of the type 26 Elan roadster; - 1500, - 1600, - S1,- S2
Nothing like design changes (cost savings??) on the fly!
Best wishes guys - happy New Year ---- Bill

No worries Bill, I've got 0584 delivered in April 64... Not that chassis numbers were particularly chronological during that era!
This is a great source of info, but goes off Unit number rather Chassis number:

The studded wheel is pretty rare! But as you say in that early era of ramping up production there were all sorts depending on stock availability! It must have been a very interesting place to work at in that time... Ingenuity must have been key and make it up as you go!!!

Oh the so called S1.5's were the ones in between, a bit of both a S1 and S2... Probably stock levels. It's clear what the differences are between the 2 but there was a murky transition!
