Lotus Elan

Lotus 5 speed box + bits

PostPost by: vincereynard » Fri Jun 03, 2016 1:16 pm

This was bought, for a project that sadly never happened, from a dealer who maintained that it had been checked and was fine. For what that is worth.

There does not seem to be any damaged threads / chipped teeth or other damage I can see.
Certainly, considering it is loose on the bench, it changes gear more crisply and cleanly that any
of the 5 speed cars I have driven recently!

It is complete with the gearstick, as can be seen, a 5 speed flywheel and propshaft.
I also have a new 5 speed gaiter.

Drop me a PM if interested .

Would there be a bell housing or tail housing to go with this or is it just the box, prop, flywheel, gaiter and gear-lever?
Thanks

The second image shows both the bell housing and the tail housing. Do keep up at the back there! :D
Far as I know, all that is needed is a 5 speed mount.

Sorry for thread drift*, but I'd really appreciate a few more pictures or a video of the 4th gear cluster (selected and not selected) and the linkage mechanism.

I've a 5 speed box that is refusing to engage 4, see:
lotus-gearbox-f37/lotus-speed-trouble-engaging-4th-t35996.html#p246372

It would be extremely useful to have some pictures/video or a working box to help diagnose mine once removed from the car or get an idea of what it might be before I pull the box/engine.

Thanks,

Mark

If you click on the first image does it give you the option (an arrow at the side)
of selecting a second? In my display the first image has text at the bottom that states 1 of 2.

Hi. I am currently rebuilding my Plus 2. Body off, new Lotus chassis, Big bore radiator, drive shaft conversion and much more. It is currently a 4 speed and I would love to convert it to 5 speed, if such a thing is possible. I know my way around gearboxes, having successfully rebuilt one for my Daimler Dart from a box of bits. My question is simply how much are you asking for it. You say you have not actually had it running in a car, just tested on a bench. In my limited experience, that probably means it's ok although there is always that possible...."but" ......which you only find out later. However, if the price is right, I am definitely interested. Cheers for now, Chris. ([email protected])

Hi Vince, is the box still for sale? I don't know how to PM so if I could ask you to send me one with price and location that would be great!

Thanks Peter
