Sold - TTR 13x5 knock on Minilites & tyres

PostPost by: dunclentdr » Mon Sep 14, 2015 1:11 pm

I bought these wheels from TTR in March 14 for my S3, cost was ?523. They were used for 3 months only and have been unused since as my car has been restored. Have decided to go back to original steel wheels.

Hence they have only seen about 300 miles use!! They come with 4 matching Dunlop SP10 tyres. Each of the wheels has minor damage (see photos) from clumsy use if a spinner device, a quick trip to the wheel refinisher will sort this.

For sale, ?295, buyer collects from Worcestershire.

Thanks

David

Was curious why you decided to not use the minilites and went back to the steel wheels. I have been contemplating switching to minilites on my S4. Did you run into some problems or just a personal preference?

Thanks

...I switched because the slight extra with seemed to be causing the tyre to rub on the inside lip of one wheel arch. I had this dresses back as part of a very expensive body refurb but found there was still a light rub so decided not to take the risk...

And I am curious, what was wrong with your steels in the first place to make you try the minilites? Were they bent, buckled, distorted or just not looking nice? In re-fitting the steels, are you going to get them restored? Have you done this yet? If so who did you use?
Thanks.
Keith.

Hi Keith - it's a long story! I had another S3 going thro a full rebuild to original spec that needed steel wheels and my existing S3 is somewhat non-standard so was happy to try the minilites (and I liked the look)!!

I had the steel wheels stripped and powder coated at Option1 - was about ?60 per wheel and whilst not perfect they look really good. Had a garage I trust do a good balance on them and they run fine with no vibration.

I'm happier now that the wheels look 'right' in the arch, I found the minlites looked like they were a little too 'out' from the arches, I guess it is just a matter of personal taste.

................................steel wheels need the following, if you don't have a paint shop: sand all of the surfaces to (dents seperately, maybe even a bit of filler!?) 120, 240.... ..to 600 (wet), degrease etc.... apply first layer of silver (dupli color is dupont i think) wait 30 min for second, wait 24 hrs. go for another sanding (600 wet) and apply another thin layer of silver. wait an hr and apply the first layer of transparent and after 30min apply another layer of transparent. you'r looking at 5hrs of labour PER WHEEL! drink a beer or two, some good music and on monday your all set! sandy (minilites aren't everybody's cup of tea!!)
