ZF S5-18/3 Transmission

around the late 70's and early 80's Lotus had some duplicate numbers for road cars and F1 cars as with the usual Lotus careful book keeping they ended up with two number registers :roll: . My S1 Esprit is type 78 and there is a Type 78 F1 car also.

In my opinion there is No Way that the ZF box would be suitable for use with a DFV-it was a design from the sixties for road cars. The power limit would probably be in the 220 lb/ft region-certainly in competition use.

No ZF gearbox was ever used in any Excel model.

Early cars used a Getrag box, but the later cars used the excellent Toyota unit (this has also been used as a ZF replacement in the Lotus Sunbeam.
