Lotus Elan

Zetec stuff

PostPost by: daverubberduck » Tue Jul 29, 2014 10:36 am

For sale are the following items. They are being sold as a complete lot, I do
not want to split it.

Spyder Zetec chassis unused.
Unused Ford Zetec engine, supplied in original Ford crate.
Used MT75 gearbox from a Ford Scorpio.
Other used Ford components including differential, prop, radiator.
Ford RS 2000 sports manifold.
Suzuki high performance throttle bodies.
Spyder refurbed wishbones.
Exhaust pipe.

I am either looking for cash or, if someone is converting their car to Zetec,
then I would consider a part exchange for any items such as: twin cam engine,
4 speed gearbox, diff etc.

Or... if someone is looking to trade their (non zetec, reasonable condition)
Elan or +2 for a zetec project then I could also include the following items:

+2S/130 V5 and original VIN plate.
Original Lotus glassfibre body.
Partial interior incl dash and clocks.
Front and rear screens.
Various misc lights and other parts (boxed).

All the parts are located at Long Stratton in Norfolk, UK and can be viewed there
any day except Sunday (daytime or early evening only). I can also supply pics.

Background: I already own an original +2 which is near the end of a total restoration.
I bought the +2S/130 identity last year, I don't know why. Then the zetec stuff became
available so I bought it thinking I would make a road legal track car. Now I've
changed my mind.

Hi there,
I am completely new to the engine swapping idea.
I have had my '65 Elan since about '79. It has been waiting for the past 20+ years for me to return to it.
I have no interest in stock. I want tons of performance.
Is your stuff for a two or four seater?
Why Zetec? Why not Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc?
What are you hoping to get for the correction?

Hi Erick
There is a company in the UK called Spyder Cars which has been going for over 30 years. They developed an upgraded Elan +2 and they sell all of the parts to do the upgrade as well as offering to do the work themselves. It is basically a modernised Elan +2 and at the heart of this car is a 2.0 litre Ford Zetec engine which I believe can be tuned to 200bhp. This engine will not fit into a standard Lotus chassis, at least not without a lot of modification, so Spyder provide a spaceframe chassis that will take the Zetec engine as well as a Ford MT75 5speed gearbox. The rest of the transmission is also Ford. I have not done this myself but if I have got any of this wrong then I'm sure someone will step in and correct me. Anyway, I don't know if anyone has ever put a Honda, Toyota, or Madza engine into an Elan, I have certainly never heard of this, but the point about using the Zetec engine is that it is a well developed route to getting a lot more power and reliability into your car. I have decided not to go down this path but stick with the less powerful, less reliable, noisy, leaky twin cam engine, which I love.

Dave
p.s. my stuff is for an Elan +2 i.e. 4 seater.

I equally love the Twin-Cam but must take some objection to your description versus a Zetec

less powerful ? - on a $ for $ basis maybe but you can get a solid 170+ bhp from a road useable 1700cc twin cam which will keep it up with most Zetec cars in the real world and in the end the dollars you put into the twin-cam will add to the car value but the dollars in a Zetec are less certain I think.

less reliable? - Maybe a little more routine maintenance required with carbs and points ignition and such than an Zetec with an engine management system but no real reason to be less reliable if its built right and maintained right..

noisy ? - depends how you silence the intake and exhaust but no reason to be more noisy than a Zetec.

leaky ? - only if you don't build it right or have an early rope seal engine

cheers

My apologies Rohan. My last comment was a bit tongue in cheek and I didn't mean to offend.

Hey, with my old 4-bolt, 'rope' seal Twin-cam, I seem to be down to dripping just 1 drop per minute.
