Lotus Elan

3.55 or 3.54 Differential Required

PostPost by: smithy26r » Mon Jun 25, 2012 3:15 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am after one of the above items, as I use my Elan as a daily car, I cannot take it off the road, whilst waiting for a rebuild.

Can anyone help with either a rebuilt or non-rebuilt one?

Thank you in advance.

Salut Smithy

Leslie on this forum sold me a really nice rebuilt unit. Considering the price these go for the cost was quite reasonable and I know I have a unit that is going to last the life of my car.

He goes under 512BB here, or you can pm me for his email address.

Hi Smithy
If you have no luck with Leslie, you can get a new 3.54 crown wheel and pinion set from Burtonpower. Not cheap and, unless you are a lot cleverer than me, you will need to factor in the cost of having the diff shimmed and the pinion preload set by a professional. But at least it is a solution.

Salut Vernon

I thought my only namesakes were Elvis' dad and Harry Potter's uncle
:D

The Burton Power CWPs are an expensive solution, but I seem to remember Paul Matty making an unflattering remark about current CWP offerings - and I only know of the BP units.

There are usually a couple on eBay at any one time, though you should probably factor in a rebuild. At the moment:

Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your input and time to reply and I hope to have a fully re-built 3.55 in my 'sweaty paws' on Thursday!

I will then get the old one re-built in due course, as a spare.

Happy motoring.

Cheers
