S4 Elan BDG

Well, finally fired up the Cosworth in the Elan. First time the car is capable of moving under its own power since about 2004! Sounds beautiful. Runs fine but the alternator's not charging and the CAI tach doesn't seem to recognize the Motec output.

Given I'm running a tiny Li battery I think I'll get the alternator working before driving it anywhere, and I still need to put new seals on the front AR brake calipers, but I'm crossing my fingers to get the car to LOG39 which is just 30 min from my house this year.

Wooooo...

That's great news!

Alt - check the energizer connection (the dash light).

Tach - likely your motec has both a high and low tach output option. Try the other!

Tom, looking forward to seeing your car at LOG!

Alternator was easy, a pin got pushed back into a plug housing that wasn't immediately obvious.

I haven't checked into the tach yet but I was thinking it was a setup issue as Kyle says. I'll take it to LOG without a tach if necessary - i'm not likely to exceed the redline on this engine!

Would have driven yesterday but the clutch wouldn't disengage. I just think the concentric slave needs to be bled which I'll do today.

Been playing with this build for a long time, plenty of pictures. My plan was to do a post-build thread once I know it is a success :-)

But here is a recent pic of the engine swap twins.

I think that means you're on the wrong forum:-)

They are an interesting contrast. The Miata is 500kg heavier than the Elan but has nearly twice the HP. when I have them both sorted I'll probably choose between them and let one go.

Maybe use the proceeds to get a nice early original Elan for my old age...

Have you weighed it with the BDG in it?

Mine weighed 1500 even with about 1/4 tank of gas.

It's looking hopeful that i can indeed get the Elan to the LOG under its own power:-) Drove it a few miles this morning without walking or putting out fires (so much for postponing the heat shield). Just needs carprts and such now.

I'm not registered but expect to drive it up Saturday and park in the public lot of anyone wants to see it.

Cross your fingers!

The Motec output requires a resistor (to power I remember). I used a 1kohm resistor for my setup. Do a quick Google to confirm.
