Now here is an engine to see off those Ztecs, Duratecs and BD engines!

And how many MPGs (or GPM.s) would one get out of that?

Just imagine the acceleration!

Performance
Maximum thrust: wet: 169.2 kN (38,050 lbf) dry: 139.4 kN (31,350 lbf)
Overall pressure ratio: 15.5:1
Specific fuel consumption: 33,8 g/(kN?s) or 1.195 lb/(h?lbf) (cruise) / 1.39 (SL) lb/(h?lbf)
Thrust-to-weight ratio: 5.4:1

John :wink:

By my calculations the Elan fuel tank could supply it for around 15 seconds at cruise. So apart from a little extra heat shielding to the body, which should be easy as you have to do a little fibreglass work to fit the slightly larger the tail pipe, and a slightly bigger fuel pump, you would also need a bit larger fuel tank and it all should fit fine.

You would probably also need to convert the electronics in the tacho as the old current sensing unit would probably swing to much and under read a little. I would not bother with changing the speedo gearbox drive as you will not need the gearbox and the kind man in the car with the flashing lights will always tell you how fast you were going if here is any question about your speed.

15 seconds, you are kidding ...

WIKI:
Fuel consumption: 46.85 lb/mi (13.2 kg/km) operating for maximum range
Cruise speed: Mach 2.02 (?1,340 mph, 2,158 km/h) at cruise altitude

1 liter = about 0,75 kg

I am not sure how many liters are in the car, but optimistic 40 l = 30 kg
=> 30kg /13,2 kg/km = 2,27 km with 30kg

At 2158 km/h ~= 600 m/s => 2,27km / 600m

=> 4 seconds !!!

I think 15 seconds for 1 engine - 4 seconds for all for engines on a concord?

If you fitted all 4 Concord engines to an Elan then you would need the next size up fuel pump also and probably increase the size of the wiring to it in the loom

Maybe overkill, but just for peace of mind, I would also recommend a slightly harder brake pad as well.

You will also need to deal with the noise complaints from your local NIMBYs.

A year or so ago I stood about 150 yards away from a Victor that was testing its engines and couldn't hear myself think.

The Concorde, being a commercial aircraft, had noise levels, that while high, were acceptable.

The SR-71 was a different animal. For static tests, the surrounding area was cordoned off and you needed special passes even for that. The ground close to the aircraft would vibrate during the runup. The exhaust had pinpoints of compressed gasses that looked like diamonds. Preceding the Concorde (and roughly contemporaneous with the Elan) this was a sustained Mach 3+ aircraft at over 80,000 feet altitude, a performance level never even approached in the succeeding 50 years. The decommissioned aircraft are on display at various locations, but I do not think any of the engines made it outside.

No, no, no, no,no,! :wink:

Concorde having 4 Olympus 593's, with full reheat on each at take-off, got fined by the US authorities for breaking noise regulations every time she took-off.

The Olympus 593 with full reheat produces 34,000 lbf the J58 only 32,000lbf. Concorde has 4 engines the SR-71 has only 2. So Concorde was roughly twice as noisy! This is a 1960's pure gasturbine with reheat - it aint quiet!

Concorde 1969, 4 x Olympus 593, Mach 2.2, range 3500NM, height 60,000ft ... While carrying 120 passengers!

Oh and if you want noise - English Electric lightning - Interceptor - 1958 , Mach 2, 2 x RR Avon with reheat climb rate 20,000 ft/min

Also Handley Page Victor - 1952 4x RR Conway - a strategic bomber that could loop, roll, and broke the sound barrier... But living in Radlett I am bias
