Lotus Elan

**** Server Upgrade ******

PostPost by: jcocking » Mon Jan 20, 2020 4:00 am

We just finished a server upgrade this weekend. The old one was sputtering, wheezing, and dropping bits all over the place.

Changes:
  • Running on a newer bigger server.
  • All RSS Feeds have changed. Sorry for the inconvenience for those with a feed reader. gymrss.php?news&digest
  • The site is set up with SSL
  • Moved the server to NYC for faster performance from over the pond
  • Fixed broken search tool
If you see something that does not feel right, please respond to this post and let me know about it.

For those in the EU, both the long and short term, how is the performance? Do things seem faster, slower, or about the same?

:D :D
Do you mean the UK or do you mean EU27, or has the Brexit situation sailed over your head without noticing ? :D

Only about 11 days to go now before they are separate.

In the UK, here in London, this new server seems faster & more responsive.

It does seem faster and I like that after a post is read it changes colour. Previously this only happened when I refreshed the page. It is helpful when there are a lot of posts to check.
Thanks Jeff

I think I started the post with EU: both the long and short term.  It has been fun following Brexit. It is a welcome respite of the drivel our media puts out all day.

Jeff,

Thanks again for all the effort. This site is always on my 'must read daily' list.

Speed in the UK is better, and the annoying tendency the old site had of requiring you to log-in again to post a message if you took more than 30 seconds to compose it also seems to be fixed.

Great job.

One small area still to fix, the 3 bar 'menu' icon in the top left hand corner of the home page doesn't seem to work at all on my iPhone, and only in landscape mode on my iPad. This has been long standing problem, and I guess is down to the website builder you use. Not urgent, but if you get a chance to fix, it would help my morning commute.

Andy.

There is something that is not right

in old posts there are a lot of "?" where an apostroph should be, like "isn't" is displayed a s "isn?t"
I just made a test and made a searched for "ÜÖÄ" and öäü was displayed as search string.

You should check with character sets (UTF, ISO, WTF ;- ) )

1967 S3 DHC (now adjusted by Brian Buckland, totally calm idle)
