1964 Lotus Elan S1

PostPost by: olivier » Tue Mar 30, 2021 1:55 pm

It is with regret that I part with my Elan S1 from July 1964. This Elan type 26 was imported at the time by the French Parisian dealer Royal Elysée. This is a real French (abroad market) from the LOTUS factory with left-hand drive, km / h speedometer and LHD headlights.
This car has benefited over the last 3 years from a total restoration and in its original configuration. Specialists from different trades worked on this car. All the original parts of the car have been preserved. The only sprains are the removal of the dynamo for an alternator, an electric fuel pump and a set of quality carpets in place of the vinyl "elephant skin".
The technical control (French MOT) passed at the end of the restoration is blank.
The parts purchased for the restoration are all from UK LOTUS suppliers.
Since the end of the restoration, the car has traveled approximately 1500 km according to the rules of the art to carry out the break-in.
Photos of the major phases of the restoration are available, please ask me.
A spare wheel is placed in the bottom of the trunk.

Some indications on the restoration that I could detail during the exchange with the interested persons:

The chassis which is original has been checked, sandblasted and repainted with epoxy paint. All the block cylinders are new as well as the 4 Rotoflex. The rear shocks are new.
The 13 inch rims (sandblasted and repainted) and the original hubcaps are those fitted to the Type 26. 5 new tires and tubes.
The gearbox is the original close ratio which has been revised and the axle has a ratio of 3.77. This couple provides great driving pleasure with good and long acceleration and also allows for a few trips on the 4 lanes.
The poly of the body is very healthy and the parts that needed repairs were made by a specialist. The color is Wedgwood blue (Lotus tint), the hard top, the bumpers and the rims are painted in metallic gray, the side sills, the windshield surround, the screw heads and the instrument panel towers. edge in satin black.
The custom-fitted hard top is delivered with the car as well as the convertible top frames (window towers and the 2 roof bars).
The engine has been rebuilt, the block and the cylinder head are the original parts of the car.
The electricloom has been checked and all the terminations redone.
The car does not heat up, the original radiator has been rebuilt and I kept the fan mounted on the water pump.
The pneumatic for the headlights works very well.
For braking, the copper circuit and the hoses are new, all the calipers have benefited from new pistons and gaskets, the master cylinder repaired with a kit of new gaskets.
The dashboard has been veneered with teak leaf and oiled in the original tint. The glove box is with the option of a lockable door. The doors have been relined and the seats redone.
The steering wheel is a very well made remanufacture.
The list is very very long and Iforget many things of course ...
The car is located in France, Normandy.
I ask for 46500 €

Olivier

You have it properly priced.

I have owned my Elan 1600 (S1), #26/.0538, since my factory purchase (sight unseen) in December of 1963. It was shipped to me in Vancouver and I used it for club hill climbs (as well as squiring pretty young ladies). I restored it back to stock 25 years ago and have just completed its annual check over for the upcoming summer driving season.

There are, I think, so few of us original early owners left, 58 years for me, and it is sad to see such a unique car (and the accompanying memories) go on the market due to the owners aging. I certainly with empathy with our situation .

I figure that when I get to the point when I am unable to still drive mine with a little vigor to either save it for my coffin or pass it on to my son. Probably the later.

Good luck with your sale!

Superb, Olivier, and it looks correct right down the the horrible colour of the steering wheel!

Though, shouldn't the cam cover be blue (as that green was used for the later S/E engine) and I'm not sure if the 3.77 was available but neither of those things would put me off if I was in the market for it, they are both authentic upgrades. Best of luck with it.

Lovely, lovely! This car, if nearby, would have me scrambling to sell a Seven and an S4 Elan.
