I have two Elans that I am working on. The 1965 Series 2 is now completed and ready for a new home. The Elan Sprint will probably take another month or two and there is a good chance I will keep it when it is finished...or I might wind up with the S2 and sell the Sprint. Bottom line is I only need one. So, the story on the S2 is as follows.
I bought it from a fellow that did more work and less driving. He had the engine rebuilt, about 2000 miles ago, matching number. He also had the car painted. The paint has some flaws but does present well and is quite striking in person. The body is very nice, straight with no stress cracks. He owned it for 22 years and asked if I would note that in the original Owners Handbook which comes with the car. Original Workshop manual too. He had a set of knock off hubs that I installed, now that is a job! I sourced very good original pin drive rims, holes not elongated or cracked, and painted them per factory black inside silver out. New knock offs from UK with a cool three eared leather covered removal/tightening tool. New Vredestein Sprint tires completed this package. The original steelies with proper hubcaps can come with the car. He rebuilt the suspension and it looks clean and proper today. I replaced bearings and ball joints when I did the hubs. The frame is original with correct numbers showing. The frame is painted and clean. The transmission is a joy, snicks and shifts like a Lotus should. The gauges and lights all work but the gas gauge is a little iffy! I rely on a yardstick to be sure. It has the beautiful original wooden wheel and proper shift knob. The interior panels are complete with ashtrays and excellent detailing. The carpets are replacements. The dash has been redone in an attractive birdseye, perhaps maple. A few cracks but very nice. Matches the wood wheel and shift knob nicely. I completely stripped the seats, straightened the birdcage frame wiring, replaced some springs and recovered them with exact per original vinyl. The top was another fun project. It is new from Robbins, StayFast and looks - fits very nicely.
Also sourced an original type battery box to cover the new dry cell Odyssey battery. I installed a shut off switch to the box that can save the battery if the car isn't used regularly. For safety you can take the it with you if you are leaving the car unattended. The prior owner changed to an alternator and high torque starter as well as reversing polarity to negative earth. Part of the reason was to accommodate the auxiliary fan. The original generator and starter are included. That's most of it. Happy to talk about it. 505 660-5256 or email thru this forum. For value, the last good one I have seen that sold was a white S2, about 6 months or so ago. It went for $50,500 on EBay. This is a good comparison. This S2 is ready to go, not a project. It is all here, proper and matching.
