'The original chassis was very solid and straight with minimal surface rust and no rust holes.'

I bet there are not many UK-based owners that can say that!

Bob,

I went to ebay to check out your ad and I also went to the link you provided to see photos of the restoration. All I can say is very nice job. I would encourage others to check out the photos beginning at:

Bob,

Very nice restoration

Looking through the photos how did you do your dash. I see you had put foam down first, what id you use for the pad itself

I restored a 1964 myseld and found a used dash. It came out pretty good but could be better

Thanks,
John

The S1 is still for sale. The ebay bidding was strong but not strong enough. I had the top bidder off line come up to my reserve on Friday but then on Saturday he sent me a email backing out of the deal. Says his daughter got laid off and he now has to put her through graduate school.

As to the crashpad, I got the last one that Ray at RD Enterprises had in stock. Good quality plastic. It was a real sticky time however when I sprayed contact cement on the inside of the pad and the outside of the padding. As soon as I touched the two together they instantly stuck - LIKE GLUE! And it wasn't all the way on yet! I had a heck of a time peeling back the pad and pushing everything into place. Turned out nice.

Hi Bob,
Yes indeed, very nice job. I sent your auction link to several folks - sorry it didn't sell.
I'm enjoying the restoration photos as well.
I'm thinking of replacing my crash pad, and was thinking I'd use new expanding foam. Do you have any thoughts on this? I see you re-used your old foam, so maybe you or others can shed some light on this.
Thank you,

The Type 26 Register is getting the crashpads re-made. Foam filled and to original spec:

I had to buy my frogskin rubber carpets for my S2 from California...seems only fair that you have to get the crashpad from the UK!!

Hi Mark,
I've got the crashpad, but it is just the plastic shell. My thought was to form a mold for the open space (back) of the pad, then inject with expanding foam, leaving me with, I hope, a minimum of trimming. The only problem is the mess that expanding foam makes - sticks to everything!
Any other methods out there?
Cheers,
Greg

Just so you know, I did sell the S1 Elan to a nice couple from New Orleans. On to the next project, a 66 Elan S2 SE.

way off subject I know but how do I tell if my 66 S2 26/5416 is a SE or not and what is the difference?

The S/E was introduced at 26 5282 and had:

115bhp Engine
Close Ratio Gearbox
3.55 ratio differential
Servo assisted brakes
Knock-on wheels
Stainless steel trim under doors
Indicator repeaters on front wings
Carpet replaced rubber ?frog-skin? mats.

It's all here:
