Elan Sprint oil Pressure

Hi,

I took a car out for a test drive on the weekend and the oil pressure was showing at around 65 when driving. I believe the norm is only around 40 so I was just wondering if 65 is acceptable?

If not, what should I look for as the cause?

sounds like it has a high pressure pump fitted for some reason. normal relief valve setting is around 40 psi the typicalhigh pressure pump is around 60 psi

What is the oil pressure at idle when fully warmed up?

Yep, it has a High pressure pump. I'd advise taking it off and fitting a standard pump, a good s/h Burman will do the job nicely. There's another original make, but I can't remember the brand name at the mo.
I've had to do it with two of my Elan's that came with HP pumps. They don't need one.
Vast majority of new ones are either HP, or non-descript make, you're much better off with a good S/H original one.

The other make to Burman was Hobourn Eaton :) NOS pumps sometimes turn up on ebay.

I bought both of mine from Ebay, they turn up regularly,

Hi Guys,
When I had a high pressure pump on my car, it read 60psi at running revs but 25psi when idling as it does now with a 40psi pump. Our cars do not run at 40psi when idling.
It seems to me that both readings are high so I wonder if the gauge is faulty and reading about 50% over at all times.
It may be the gauge that is wrong, not the pump. I suggest you check the oil pressure with a different gauge before spending money on a pump.

There’s a number of different variations of Ford pumps. All will work but some are better than others. Best ones are the latest ones with 731M part number cast into the body.

FYI - early canister type filter pumps have a lower flow rate, intermediate spin on filter pumps have separate oil bypass, late spin on filter pumps have oil bypass integrated with intake port.

Or even Burman. This one was taken off a twin cam. £14 if anyone wants it. Will need a good clean.

Good luck taking it off if the engine is still in the car!

65 psi is indeed higher than the usual 40 psi. This could be due to a blocked oil passage or a malfunctioning oil pressure relief valve. It might also be a faulty oil pressure sensor. Check these areas first to identify the cause.

As previously posted, it's a high pressure pump.

After having removed the exhaust manifold and dynamo / alternator, not to mention undoing / removing both engine mounts, gearbox bracket etc. I know, just a 2 minute job for some of you, but a mornings work for me. And thats before sliding the engine over about 4".

I would dearly love to watch some folk actually work on their cars, I need a good laugh.
