Ok, so I did take the advice and touched the solenoid with the screwdriver and bang ! it did spark and moved the starter ! So that did work. So do you believe my issue is the ignition? Thoughts ? thx

Assuming you haven't been unlucky and have bought a dud solenoid, then there are a couple of possibilities.

The solenoid was designed for a car with a metal body and relies on the case of the solenoid being earthed to work. As mentioned above, run a temporary wire from a good earth (any bolt on the engine) to the metal bracket on the solenoid and see if that makes a difference.

If not, then there is a problem between the ignition switch and the solenoid. It could be the connectors, the wire itself, or the switch mechanism on the back of the ignition switch. The switches can corrode and give up working.

Tracing the cable with a multi meter would be the easiest way to locate the problem.
