gearbox oil

PostPost by: MACCA.GLM » Tue Apr 11, 2023 2:36 pm

Hi
Can anyone recommend a good gearbox oil for the 2000 E gearbox. I Presume it needs to be of a type which does not effect the bronze or brass synchroes.
Thanks

Although Sulphur in traditional EP oil does have a very slight corrosive effect on yellow metals if you look at the data on this only at elevated temperatures and a long time span is very small detrimental problem found.
My opinion is the recommended oil in the W/S manual is perfectly satisfactory, advantages of Sulphur outweigh the very small disadvantage, why pay mega money!

I have been advised GL-4 is best for our gearboxes.

Redline MTL or MT90 is my choice. Which one would be aligned to original oil specs for the box. Is it available in the UK?

Fitted it both in Lotus and the daily. Was very noticeable improvement to shift feeling in daily compared to previous fluid.

Comma SX75W90 semi-synthetic GL4 spec is recommended by many gearbox overhauling companies.
Or a proper EP80 from Castrol, Comma, Esso etc.

As you say, an incorrect spec of oil will cause problems - in particular GL5 is not compatible with brass synchro rings.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies. My gearbox has Halfords gl4 oil in it but I'm not satisfied with the gear changes especially
changing down. There's no grating or meshing problems but getting the revs rt makes it better. when I first got he car the oil was unknown and when I drained it out to change it I noticed it was
very thick and took along time to drain out,so have no idea what was in it.The box is in very good order, and has been totally rebuilt.

I guess 26 sovs is expensive but I'm happy to pay it if you guys think its worth it.

Regards

G

+1 For MTL. I've used it in both my Plus 2 and an Esprit I used to have and it made an impressive improvement! And it's not like you'll have to change it as often as engine-oil, so that takes a little sting out of the price.
