S3 S/E Differential Paint

PostPost by: [email protected] » Tue Sep 13, 2022 12:41 pm

The photo shows the differential I am rebuilding after I de-greased the outer portion. Note the light blue stripe, there is a matching one on the other side. Is anyone familiar with this stripe? It 'appears' to be original.
Thanks

Perhaps it’s to denote the ratio at a glance mines 3.77 a yellow stripe

thanks Len. Mine is an S/E, 3.55:1. I have had another person who worked at Lotus during the late 60s speculate that it was probably to mark the differential as an 'S/E' (3.55) unit. Your marking makes sense.

The original blue has been painted over, probably whilst in-situ in the car (awkward to get at the sides because of the flanges sticking out).
The daubed-on red lead has been applied whilst the chassis was been painted, lotus were a bit rough with their finishes, but not that rough!

Just poor detailing by the previous owner, methinks??

The diffs weren't detailed with ratios on the outside, normally.
