S4 Heater Fan not running

PostPost by: Temmck » Sun Sep 11, 2022 4:25 am

In the recent S4 Dash Harness post, someone made reference to oiling the heater fan motor bearing. How do you oil the bearing with the heater and motor in the car or is this only done with it on the bench?

I ask because I have both voltages going to the fan motor but it doesn't turn. I have tried tapping the motor to break it loose but no joy. I plan to pull the dash forward (again!) to add windshield washer jets, replace the heater hoses (clogged) and replace the voltage stabilizer (fuel level not reading) so I will be in the area if there is a simple fix. I don't plan to fully remove the dash, just pull it back a few inches. How hard is it to remove the heater assembly? Can it be done with the dash pulled back or does the dash need to come off completely?

Thanks for the link. I may give this a try but since my motor doesn't turn at all, this may be a long shot.

When I did it I had the dash all the way out, so not sure if it can be done with just pulling it back a bit. But certainly worth a try. Don't get your hopes up too much - with the various control cables and wiring in that area, it may be pretty constrained.

With the dash out, of course, it's really easy!

Once you get the heater box out, you'll need to disassemble it. To get the motor out you'll need to unsolder the motor lead from the 2-speed resistor. Then remove the fan (after removing the grub screw I used heat to get the fan off). Then relatively simple to disassemble the motor (go slow so you'll know how to reassemble). After cleaning up all the dry rust dust inside the housing, I used light machine oil on the shaft and bushings. Motor definitely runs faster and quieter than before.

Thanks. I'm not confident I can get the heater out without fully removing the dash. When I pull the dash back this weekend I will see if I can get something in there to see if the fan spins or is seized. I would really like a little heat in the car now that it's getting colder in the mornings.

Pretty sure there's no access to the fan until you remove the box, but good luck in any event.
