Alan Voights gearbox rebuild

PostPost by: TBG » Fri Sep 02, 2022 8:22 am

Hullo all. After over 200k miles my gearbox needs a refresh - or total rebuild. It started making nasty noises in France this summer and I am thinking of sending it to Alan Voights for the rebuild.

Do any of you have experience of his expertise? Also does anyone have any recommendations for gearbox rebuilds in the South West of England.

Thanks so much in advance! D

Hi D,
Alan Voigts and his son Mark have been in the gearbox repair business for many years.
Apart from running a side street garage they have developed their own 5 speed gearbox for the Elan and have been quietly producing them for a long time now. They don`t advertise because they could not cope with more work.
Mark gives lectures to car clubs about gearboxes (or did).
Some of the UK dealers who say they will overhaul your gearbox actually send it to Voigts and just charge a mark up.
They have rebuilt a differential for me which was done in a satisfactory time at a fair price.
After my experience I can recommend them for the job.

Hi
About 18 months ago I purchased a Lotus 5 speed to fit to my +2 and I took it to Voigts for a rebuild prior to installation. I am very happy with the rebuilt box and found the guys great to deal with.

I fitted Alan Voigts 5-speed T9 to my Spyder chassised Plus 2 in 2004. This was the first Voigts 5-speed in a Spyder Plus 2 and there were quite a few mods involved, which Alan and Spyder later incorporated.

I have raced and hillclimbed for many years, and done annual week long+3000 mile tours all over Europe. I now have 169 hp. The gearbox has never given a problem.

Alan also rebuilt a Lotus 5-speed for me.

We have kept in contact over the years.

Highly recommended.

I like Alan, he's good, but Al (Promotor) is outstanding; he's rebuilt two close ratio boxes for me and several diffs.

This is the more robust version of the T9 as fitted to the Caterham. If opening the gearbox for a Voight’s conversion, it might be worth considering an alternative gear set from BGH with a longer 1st (they do a 2.6 and a 2.9 - this gearbox will be a 3.1).

I’d be happy to help with a pick up and getting it to Voight’s in Merseyside.

I have an Alan Voigts five speed box in my S3 Elan since 2008. I'm very happy with it.

My gearbox on it's way to AV as we speak. Have chatted to him and he seems a very genuine chap. I have no need for a 5 speed as (to bore you once more!) I have the 3:1 CWP! Pip Pip. D
