To be honest, Thirlestane was the first time I'd seen it up close and it looked pretty rough (given it has clearly been fully rebuilt)... as for the price!?! People were openly laughing about it assuming it was a joke.

I'd have had the Lotus Cortina for 100k less to be honest every time. Can't imagine why Dario is selling that...

Absolutely ridiculous especially knowing that vertually 100% of it has been replaced.

Hmm given the owner/ seller is a well known dealer, I'd suggest he's actually just hurting his reputation at that level.
It suggests that anything you might buy from him is 200% overpriced which would certainly put me off ever inquiring on any of his cars for sale in the future.
I also wonder what he's told Dario? "Don't worry mate, well do a package deal of the pair and make a fortune: you sell that lovely Lotus Cortina with provenance and originality (for what it is probably worth) while I'll throw in Triggers Broom, sorry Elan (where we jacked up the number plates and drove a fresh car underneath them) for triple its real value."

I had a read of the advert which says it comes with a certificate of provenance. How? There was nothing left of the original car.

Certificate of providence just says we the Lotus factory recognise this car as relating to this ID number. It says nothing about how much of the car has been rebuilt or not since it left the factory. It just says only this car can claim this ID according to the factory

Fisken deals in a different market to the one we are in. His clients are high net worth individuals and the intrinsic value means little to them, they own 'Jim Clarks Elan'. There's only one and it's unique, so to the buyer its worth the price.

Donels is 100% right: the target audience (the two cars are presented together) is the ornament collectors. Hopefully one of these fellows will also show the car which does seem to be a "Trigger's broom".

I'm happier to tinker with my project car and working out what I have to do next. I would be lost if asked to guard a temple such as an ex-JC car.

Putting a value on this one is perhaps tricky. It needs a wealthy Lotus/Jim Clark collector for who 475K is loose change, even then they are going to argue on price and not just pay it. Fiskin knows these guys will get it inspected by the best specialists and the price will be negotiated down. The less wealthy will be concerned at possible capital loss and then facing keeping the car for a long period, can't see them buying.

The problem is that the Elan is I think still undervalued. The value of an early elan must have some relationship to the value.

I see in the Fiskin write up they mention Jim went to Lorreto school near Edinburgh. My kids went there and didn't like it, I understand Jim didn't think much of it either.

These are the type of car usually purchased by a "celebrity chef" who also owns a "genuine" works Cooper S. Big money for bragging rights.

Here's the reply I got on Bring-A-Trailer when I asked about where 997NUR was found in Notts:

"997 nur was the car and i posted a photo of it on the back of my trailer,i paid 75 Quid for it cut the tree that was growing through the gearbox tunnel and now its been restored and was sold i was told for 250000gbp,to me it was about saving an elan had no idea it belonged to Jim clark ,i found it in sandiacre scrapyard,the scrapyard man told me the engine and box was sold to a local bloke to put in his 1965 ford anglia for 200 quid, those were the days before all this silliness,i am just glad that i had the forethought to save this great special elan not because of its value because i like to save car culture and history it was hard graft to get this thing out as it had been there for over 20 years,we all should remember this and dont keep thinking of the bottom dollar ,i still have the photo if anyone is interested just so you can see how much was left of the car and why anyone would have bothered saving it,[email protected]"

Note: this also confirms the car must now be fitted with non-original engine & gearbox.

The chassis was replaced in the late 60's after a police vehicle ran into the back of it, see "leshems"

I've had the suggestion made to me that Fisken should be offered a thousand quid for each item that was originally on the car when Clark had it......

We have now confirmed:

* Replacement chassis
* Original Elan & Gearbox sold off (engine was a replacement anyway)
* Body was hit in the rear after Jim Clark's stewardship
* Front suspension replaced

This makes trigger's broom/ Washington's axe seem quite original Maybe the vin plate is the only original part left?

Looks like the car has been owned by Fiskens for some time...
