I’m sure you’re right but it does puzzle me that car is little more than an identity

Yes but there is only one "recognised" identity and that is it :D and that is all it takes to get a very high price

I would rather have the Twin Cam Anglia 'mule' he drove.

The challenge with any car, and particularly a car that was raced, is how much of the car Jim owned is left.

This is made worse by Lotus' well known lack of decent records and their tendency to stick whatever was in the parts bin on the car at the time the car went down the line.

It certainly is an interesting car. The original advert:

Andy,

Not quite the case as this was the first car but that said there are photos on here of this car as it was found and there was very little of it left.

For those that have not seen the pictures of 997 NUR as it was found in a Notts scrap yard, here they are:

Apart from new body, new chassis, new interior & probably new drivetrain the car is exactly as it was when driven by Jim Clark!

How did it end up in a scrap yard anyway? Probably the most famous Elan ever, surpassing even Emma's cars?

I am all for finding the car and as a tribute to Jim Clark, build it as it once was, but to put that sort of price on what is maybe no more than a registration document but calling it the earliest surviving Elan, even for the motor trade, is nothing but a rip-off!

I suspect it is either going to sit for a long time for sale or disappear for a few decades into the collection of a very rich person not to be seen again until some time long into the future. Where there will be some mystery whether it is or isn't the car...

At the LOG40 dinner, Richard Parramint advised Lotus have been acquiring significant cars from the company's history. Geely has provided budget for this purpose. So perhaps it won't disappear.

There's a write up in the August issue of "Octane" for those of you who have access to "PressReader" through your local library.
I do, all free !

Ralph.

Hey Phil, Hope all is well. I think you're over estimating the celebrity value of the car at the time. In the early 70's, it was just £400-£700's worth of damaged Elan with an interesting former owner.

The present owner has been very generous in allowing access to the car at various events.
Long may that continue.
