Sprint engine bay painting.

I have seen plenty of photos now of Sprint engine bays and they are all either black or body coloured (with one or two in grey).
Does anyone know what was original?
And if I can get away with black, are there any good paints/primers or painting tips?

Hammerite might do for the hard to see rough areas, but MUST spray the smooth visible areas

That’s pretty much what I meant.
It seems too much to expect my painter to get everywhere as the preparation would be immense.
