Elan S3 VIN plate diff oil specs

PostPost by: lotustastic » Thu May 13, 2021 10:44 am

Hello,

This is purely out of curiosity. I have seen at least two VIN plates now (both from 1967 S3s including mine) that have the various mfr recommended differential oil grade info scratched through on the VIN plate. It seems that this may have been done by the factory. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks

David

Apparently Lotus was unsure of the oil to be used in the newly introduced 3.5 diffs so recommendation was left out.

Different recommendations because destination markets have different climates ?
1964 S1 (at paint shop)

I understand it isrestricted to SE models (since they either had or had the option of the 3.5 diff as per earlier post)

I think about thirty or forty years ago I read something Graham Arnold wrote about this, it was something to do with Chapman falling out with an oil company sponsor of Team Lotus, but it could just have been a tale.
