Lotus Elan

Seat belt supplier?

PostPost by: sprintsoft » Sun Feb 16, 2020 12:54 am

I’m looking for a complete set of seat belts for an Elan Sprint, specifically the Kangol fixed type.

Is eBay the only likely source or is anyone remanufacturing to the original pattern?

Thanks
Iain

Hi Iain,

I used FDTS seatbelts. They were really helpful and thorough. They were abit pricey but the quality was superb. However, I did have a Kangol seatbelt to start with. You may have to find a pair on eBay. Give Susan Taylor an email at sue”at”fdts-seatbelts.co.uk

+1 for Sue Taylor at FDTS. I can highly recommend.
Had my +2 original Kangol belts restored to 'as new' original condition and style last year with all fittings rechromed and new inertia reels. I was slightly concerned at the time about the two months it took them to get them done but the end result was well worth the wait.

+2 ( no pun intended) for Susan. I used her for bespoke Mini belts.

Do you have old ones for refurbishment ? If so Sue Miller does a great job with new webbing, labels etc.

I have this NOS set I could be convinced to part with:

They are as new...

I acquired these for my Sprint, but ended up finding a nice set of Kangol Inertia Belts. The webbing & chrome is extremely good & would not need any reconditioning.

I am in the States, but can mail or bring over in May.

Send me a PM if you are interesed.

+3 for Sue at FTDS.

I had belts restored by Sue Miller, but Sue Miller could not do anything with the buckle. I spoke to Sue at FTDS who gave me a small but crucial amount of advice that enabled me to dismantle the buckle so that it can be re-plated.

Hope this helps,

Yes - you will have to purchase an "old" set of buckles.
They do come up on Ebay now and again from a variety of vehicles and can be refurbished.
A replacement Lotus label can be inserted.
However even quite tatty sets can be quite expensive - I blame E Type owners! :D

Having said that a full MG set needing complete rework went for only £40 a couple of weeks ago.
Before xmas a better lotus set made £186.
It's like any auction - interest drives up prices.

Vehicle regulations is my day job and all I can say with regards to seat belt reconditioning is be very careful. At an OEM level (even when the Elan was new) seatbelt testing is incredibly stringent. Here in Australia there are some AS standards which can be applied to the aftermarket which can offer a degree of reassurance. Not sure what applies overseas but I would suggest that from any supplier you request details of the standards to which the repaired seatbelt has been tested. Not to mention that reusing the original FMVSS label on the repaired seatbelt is not correct and very likely illegal

Thanks to all for the great suggestions, I’ve managed to work out a deal with Phil for his NOS belts so I’m sorted.

FYI I did speak with FTDS, they seem very capable to replace webbing and do the rechroming on your existing belts and fittings to bring them back as new, Sue was very knowledgeable and I plan to use them for another project I have on the go!

I also used Sue for my +2, she had a box of NOS buckles and made up a complete set with modern inertia reels. The webbing is 2mm narrower than original, so all you purists look away and the inertia reel is no longer the Irwin type that confuses the MOT testers... However I will soon have the OE pleasure of retrieving the tunnel side belt from under the seat, unlike the modern stalk type... the choices we make...

As I said I would strongly recommend any seatbelts be repaired/refurbished/replaced to a recognized standard. Your life may depend on it.

Eg for the UK

Eg. for Australia
