I've had a couple of different clamp on mirrors on my car prior to having the frames re-chromed, but have since decided to leave them off. With the little metal/rubber plate you can get decent purchase on the frame without denting it, but I became more worried about the mirror falling off and damaging the car. Even though it was fitted as tightly as I dared, I had one fall off in the wind (I assume the vibration over rough roads didn't help), but it luckily missed the bodywork. I met an XK140 owner who resorted to tying wire around the mirror as a safety precaution after it fell off and put a dent in the rear arch.

Well this has planted some worry beads in my feeble little brain, so I had a look at mine. Glad to say there was no evidence of any marking of the frame. However I've taken on board the use of wire to catch the mirror should it come loose, although this has not happened yet after 7 or 8 months of having them fitted. Here's what it looks like

Not especially elegant, granted, but maybe peace of mind and less chance of body damage if it does come off. And you don't really notice the wire........maybe?. :) ...and the tenax fastener can still be used for the tonneau.

erm......
to me that's kind of defeated the object of the exercise........
wasnt the point of having the clamp on mirror, so you didn't need to drill the door fibreglass ???

I have fully fixed mirror anyway but the holes were already there so need to cover them up......

?????

confused.....

Ahhh, don't be confused. :D I haven't drilled the fiberglass :? The wire is attached to the Tanex fastener, which is already there for the tonneau when used. The wire is easily removed, and I might still do that, with no evidence that it was ever there.

ah....got you.....
I see what you've done......

my only other concern following on would be if it did come off and started flailing about how long would it take until you've grabbed it....and how much damage could it do in that time???....

I don't know the answer.....just throwing an idea about......
anything falling off is not good.....

I thought these fitted over the door frame and the screws were internal.......would that not make the external face of the 'U' clamp smooth??....and thus shouldn't bend the frame........
you could probably bend it on the inside if you tried too hard but this should be hidden by the seal.......shouldn't it....or do I have completely the wrong end of the stick????

Yes you do :D :D The screws are on the outside, hence the need for the rubber and steel pad to protect the outside chrome.

There would not be enough room for it with the glass in the frame if you did that

That's the wrong one for an Elan. Designed for a mini to fit on the body seam.
