Lotus Elan and Lotus Elan Plus 2 Forums

If two 1966 cars were for sale in identical condition and one was a Coupe 'pre airflow' and the other an S3 FHC with 'air flow' which would have the higher value and what would the price difference be if any ?
Just interested to know.

I think the pre-airflow is a prettier car and is more desirable. Prices seem to reflect the condition of the car not if it has the (ugly) gills.

I'm a little prejudice on the topic and have a pre-airflow coupe.

I've had both, but kept the Airflow for 40 years, so I may be a bit prejudiced as well!

With the early cars, I do like the Type 26 boot lid hinges, the Marstone radiator, and the window switches wandering around the doors until they found a permanent home on the dash. But I do like the 'gills' of the airflow as well. Not sure that the air actually flows from the eyeball vents very much.

I seriously doubt that there's anything in it given two identical cars. A very early Coupe from September / October 1965 must have a premium though, as one of the 'first'. Adam, a member on here, has a Monaco Red 1965 car, a very early car in a very rare colour, and with a factory original red interior. Now that would certainly have a premium if it ever came up for sale.

Not sure that the air actually flows from the eyeball vents very much.

I know the vents are very small, but on my Sprint coupe they do produce a cool breeze when the heater is warming my feet. And they have the benefit of being fan assisted, which they aren't on my MGB. I am glad the tiny vents are there but I don't think they would be much good on a hot summers day. If no air comes out it probably means the corrugated tube behind the vent has come adrift, or the other end of the tube isn't plugged into the back (front actually) of the heater box.
