Early Steering Wheels.

PostPost by: Fredtech » Mon Dec 21, 2015 12:10 pm

Guys. I recently came across this early steering wheel which is slightly odd, in that it has a black horn-push as opposed to the usual Green/Yellow type. Reading thru previous threads, there appears to be some debate, mostly around the Nose-Badges and when and why they were fitted. However, having not seen a Black Badge on an early wheel like this, I'm wondering if this might be correct, or defiantly wrong.

PS.... The Re-Varnish is obviously the wrong colour as well, but think that's correctable.

Thanks guys.

My S1 wheel, identical to that one, came with a black horn push. I read somewhere on this forum that the black medallion was used occasionally early on.

My '63 1600 (S1) wheel came with the green / yellow badge and is rivets protruding on the underside. my 65 S2 is badged the same but is not riveted - both are origional. My S4 Sorint coupe has the black badge.

I just picked up a 13 inch leather wrapped wheel that has a perfect black badge - never seen one before on an Elan - any one know what it would have been off of - I believe it was once part of Mr. Hickmans brothers estate.

Hi Guys. Many thanks for the reply. Interestingly, another friend mentioned that the Horn-Press may have
a Date-Stamp on the back. I've not seen that before, and my later Sprint does not seem to have one.
I'll check that out though.

Cheers Guys. John.

The horn push can be changed out in a matter of seconds. They are totally, interchangeable, only the color of the button is different.

Part number yes, makers name yes, not sure I can see a date stamp on this one, though.

Hi Bill. Further to your previous message:-

I just picked up a 13 inch leather wrapped wheel that has a perfect black badge - never seen one before on an Elan - any one know what it would have been off of - I believe it was once part of Mr. Hickmans brothers estate.

What you may have is a 26R wheel. I believe these came in 13" and 14" sizes, either Red or Black leather.

I've got a black one, as in the pictures below. Notice also that there is no "Dish" to this type of wheel,
it's completely flat. That might help you identifying the one you have. Certainly, if it's related to Ron Hickman and you have any sort of provenance, then its going to have quiet a value.

(Note, Aplha-Wheels below.... They no longer do steering wheels, but that's a completely different story....)

John.

Hi Tim. Just had a look at another Horn-Push I had.

Wondering if the last 2 digits might relate to the Year.

That would make this one a 67 and yours a 71..... ?.

Freddie, you just may be right! I've had a look at the Elan parts list and the horn push is part no 028 M 0030.

Looking at our respective pushes and knowing mine came off a 71 Sprint, leads me to think that we have 1967 and a 1971 dated horn pushes. I would imagine the other letters are Lucas part nos and/or batch numbers.

Can someone with the +2 part list look up the horn push part no, please, just out of curiosity.

Surely your date codes are 26th week of 71 (Tim) & 11th week of '67 (Freddie)?

I bet 33577B is the Lucas part number...
