Bill,

What can I say, you are spot on. Where on earth I thought it was Champion I don't know. They are exactly what you say they are. Appologies.

............is 5538 a S2? my S3 (the later body) has chassis 4982!!!?? i'm sure my chassis would've "needed" a S2 body, but it got lost for a couple of months ------------ the window switches could be positioned in both postions: both holes are there: dash and door arm rests. 36 4982 - no snow, so had a lovely ride today sandy

As Ben states on the previous page, the early Elan Type 36 cars were simply called Elan Coupe.

Elan S3 was not until unit number 5811.

I was a bit worried about taking this job on but I managed it without any outer paint damage. In the previous rear end photo the boot lid was noticeabley warped a bit. It's always been like it in my ownership. Not any more.

What a great looking car Phil. It is indeed a very late one at 5797, as the last S2 S/E was 5798! The last S2 of all was 5810, but of course the Coupe / S3 was being made in parallel with the S2 from September '65, chassis number 4510, so there almost certainly will be a few S3 cars between 5798 and 5810.

The way the chassis numbers were allocated to the S2 and Coupe makes it just about impossible to say how many S2, how many S2 S/E. how many Type 36 Coupes (later S3) were made as, no matter the model, the 'next' chassis number was allocated. Unfortunately the prefix of '26' or '36' wasn't recorded in the records.

So you definitely have the penultimate S/E,, and one of the very last S2 cars as well.

I used to have 26/5803, first registered on 2nd June 1966, which was one of the last of the S2 cars, but unfortunately that is now a 26R replica and living in Sweden. Some folks don't care about the history of these cars!!

Hi Mark,

There was a time in the late 70s that I had plans to modify it. Only at a later date did I realise quite what I had. OK some parts are replica but I've tried to be in keeping with the original design the best I can. When the weather picks up there is the small matter of the MOT. Fingers crossed with that after being off the road for so long. When I first owned it in was quite neglected and unreliable. A none working fuel gauge did not help matters. So the trip to the MOT station will be it's first real run sine being restored. Could be fun.

Phil,

Beautiful job!!!! Your car looks outstanding.

The L O T U S on the boot is correct for a S2 SE. Regular S2's had different badging on the right rear above the tail light. I've owned three S2 SE's. All were the same. My current one is close to yours with VIN 5738. Although mine has a flat floor but is also LHD. I also own 5838, a Pre Air Flow Coupe. It's easy to remember numbers when they are an even 200 apart.

Your dash and everything look terrific! May I ask where you purchased the carpeting? It looks like it fits very well.

All the best,
Frank

Frank,
Thanks for the badging information and compliments. The carpet set was supplied by Mick Millar classic Lotus spares last year.

Phil, very nicely done! May I ask where you sourced the trim for the bottom of the dash? Is it plastic or metal?

Hi, I think it was fitted to the S1. I modified it from a mini wheel arch trim as I liked the look of it but found it hard to source.
