A lot of early cars were 'done up' in the 60s and 70s to make them look a bit more modern...the oiled teak look wasn't too pleasing to many! It looks like this car has just had the dash covered in black leathercloth, and maybe a glovebox door made up. But the instruments, switches, bonnet pulls and cables look good, and how many S1 cars have you seen with the ash tray in the centre console? Only the very early cars had this.

A diamond in the rough!!

No lid on the glove box

Well the main reason I asked is a reference to a black dash on the very early cars in the Type 26 "originality" reference. Noticed the ash tray in the council and am familiar with the half dash and box since that is what my car has! :D

I think that the description of 'Black Dashbord Screws' can be mis-interpreted. It means the screws that secure the dashbord are black, rather than chrome plated as were the later screws. I don't think that the dash was ever black as standard, although I wouldn't be at all surprised if some were covered at the factory.

A glovebox option was available at some time, but we never got to the bottom of when it was offered. It was just a lid to go onto the open box, rather that a full width dash of the S2.

There are ash trays in the doors as well as on the centre console. I've never seen that before.

Of course.....black dashboard screws! In my usual way I must have scanned the article and not read it carefully.

As Roseanne Roseannadana said ......"Never mind!"

I don't profess to be an expert but have owned 4 Series 1 elans. They all had ashtrays in the armrests . 3 of the 4 had teak 2 piece dashes , all teak 2 piece dashes had glove box doors including a bourne bodied car. interior on two of the early S1 cars were tri-coulor - black-grey-buff. see below for a reference of a bourne car with its original interior very much intact with the exception of the door card and shift knob ( but on in 1968 per owner to comply with requirement to have shift pattern by local DMV)

The "black dash" referred to is not the wood surface, but the instrument bezels, which were black on the very early cars instead of chrome. Dash mounting screws were also black, as noted.

I have been told (by a well known specialist who was very excited)that the dash only came out of the factory like this on a few cars, apart from the glove box cover so makes it pretty rare.

I have now purchased the car and waiting to get it collected.

the chassis number is 26/072
Bourne body

I have paid a fair sum for the car, and already been offered a fair sum for it so I need to decide

Do I restore
Do I sell on

When you say the Chassis No, do you mean that or do you mean the Unit No? They will be different. Please confirm and I can tell you some additional info on the car, either way. Could you also kindly let me know the registration number?
