As I have at last completed the rolling chassis for my Elan S4 restoration I thought I would mark the occasion by posting a photo on the forum!

Wow! That does look outstanding! Good job.

Don't forget to take the rags our of those intake ports. And I still see a little dirt in the tire treads! Ha!

Actually, on a serious note, why are there two vacuum ports on the number one intake port. One for headlights but what would the second one be for?

William,

Looks lovely, which alternator are you using, and is green the correct colour of a bell housing? I had assumed black, but don't really know.

Hi Richard, you are right the gearbox should really be black but I just liked the idea of green. The alternator is a slightly uprated 45Amp version of the standard one. I am afraid I am not a stickler for total originality! Regards, William

The best part of this is that when William2 shuffles off his mortal coil and his Elan passes on to someone who is a stickler for originality, that poor individual will spend huge amounts of time looking for a perfect match to that "original" bellhousing green that will by then be reputed to be a special edition marking the passing of Chunky's beloved terrier Oswald.

I didn't know that your nickname Will was Chunky, or for that matter, that you had a terrier called Oswald

The gearboxes were green when they came from Ford, but were overpainted at Lotus in Grey (sometimes) for the early cars (mid way through S3 production, roughly!) and then black (sometimes) after that. But it seems that at least some green painted gearboxes found their way onto Elans at Cheshunt and Hethel. So you're being very traditional and maybe more original specification than you thought!

You have just completed all the work I need to do on my S4........one day!

My S3 gearbox had what I presume was the original green paint on it, I repainted it with the same green I used on the cam cover.
