Note for later: the air trunking seems original too...

Well, i disconected it, easy job even for me with my 2 left hands.

We can see the paper air filter inside.

Then i unscrewed 3 bolts that attach that box to the bottom of the car body.

I pulled it out of the engine bay. It does not look too bad but still, not to clean either...

Inside it is clearly rusty. I can see also that water has once got in and stayed in the bottom.

The hole on the side is weird! Why is there a hole when there are already two trumpets for air intake?
Secret alien technology?

The air filter looks good.

Sandpaper and a brush mounted on my electric drill.

Some finger skin off later it became like that...

I took a bottle of rustol and painted inside and out my components to protect them from rust.

Good to go for another 40 years don ?t you think...?!

Now i need to let it dry and buy monday some black paint.

If you want to try it, you can have mine.
But if you drive in hot weather I would not use it.
When you are doing stop and go or slow driving, the engine
bay gets hot and the engine breaths hot air.
Then the idle gets unstable.
That's why I reversed the PO's K&N to standard air filter.

Sorry, i meant: standard air filter round shape but in kn material instead of paper.

Anybody knows about this extra hole in my air box??? Is that normal?

Not absolutely certain what the purpose is, but it would make a good drain hole if you changed the angle of installation a bit. Might prevent pooling and rust.

I suspect that was its original purpose, as the air cleaner is mounted low and probably sucked in a bit of road spray in really wet driving conditions. Mine has it too.

Salut

The drain-hole theory sounds reasonable. I believe the +2 air filter (it's the same) was re-orientated to prevent water collection.

The K&N can be mounted at the end of the trunking ? la CliveBoy - to prevent hot air intake.

Yep the drain hole theory sounds good looking at the rust poodle in my box i assume it was not angled as it should.

Vertically mounted it prevent airflow to strike directly the rad. Why is it not mounted flat?

I think in its original installation in the Cortina it was mounted Horizontally and the extra hole was for the Crankshaft Breather

Horizontaly would be much clever.

You will need a longer piece of trunking

Where would be the trumpets oriented?

In the meanwhile in a distant galaxy far away....

Water drainage hole. With the trumpets low down they are susceptible to water ingress when driving in torrential rain, driving through flood water or when cleaning the car. It looks as if the angle your filter housing was previously set at allowed some water to remain inside when the car was static for a long period, hence the rust.

I know all about water ingress. Many years ago, I broke two rods when I traversed a street that suddenly flash flooded. I found that water does not compress so well. :(
