Bumper origin?

PostPost by: jabingb » Sun Mar 09, 2014 4:38 pm

I'm in the process of stripping the paint from a 66/67 FHC I just acquired and upon removal of the bumpers I found them not to be the original foam filled variety, what a surprise. Just curious, does anyone recognize the source of these as I don't recall every seeing this construction before? Jerry

According to St Wilkins, Health & Safety doesn't allow new bumpers to be filled with the polyurethane foam (I think it is). Or perhaps it was that Lotus weren't prepared to acquire and use the required operator protection which amounts to the same thing. It must be fifteen years since he told me that.

The last couple of bumpers I bought ( ) from mainstream UK suppliers were not foam filled either. I'm not convinced about the H&S explanation but either way it's an easy enough job to put it in with an aerosol type can of plumbers expanding foam.

Jerry,

Can't tell you. I've never seen that either but sure would like to see more pics of the Coupe! I have an early non airflow to do when my 66 S2 SE Roadster is done.

Use gloves and mask well. That stuff gets everywhere and sticks to anything like the proverbial!

Frank, here she is as I got it and her present state! I'm working on her at Mike Ostrov's shop, my garage as you may recall is pretty small and houses my Elise and Elite. Jerry
