Breather pipe

That short pipe between the head and the Weber airbox went missing when I had the head rebuilt recently.
Have any of you guys made one up from scratch? I don?t seem to be able to find one complete.

Thanks

Peter Burgess

BTW Octane has a feature comparing four Elans at Hethel by my friend John Simister. Part of the 50 years of the Elan celebration. Should be the May issue, or possible June. Or April. You can never tell with these publishers. My car is one of the four, the others are John's S3 fhc, Brain Smart's timewarp dhc and Lotus engineer Nick Adams with a BRM engined dhc (twin cam, not H16). Roger Becker came out for a drive too. A fun day, but not without incident.

Peter

I used a bit of copper pipe - 15mm from memory, or it might have been 22mm! I can measure if you like. I assume that you still have the two rubbery bits that fit on each end of the pipe.............. :?:

David,

Thanks, the pipe size would be useful. As for the rubber bits, there's certainly a grommet in the head.

As far as I recall 15mm plumbing pipe is a good fit. And a bit of garden hose to connect to the airbox and some jubilee clips.

Peter, I bought the pipe for mine from Paul Matty. Worth a call. It has a slight bend in it, I think, and - crucially - it has a conical piece of mesh inside to act as a flame trap. Otherwise if the carbs spit back the flame could conceivably ignite the crankcase fumes and blow the engine to smithereens.

The stainless steel mesh roll that you can buy to put in your kettle (to reduce calcification from hard water) should do nicely for that role of flame preventer.
