Thanks Gary. You've helped me decide.

Hi Richard

Glad I could help, I always try to give folks the right information so that they can make an informed decision. As you can see from my experience, I countered that and removed one from the U.S. and gave it a proper color "1988 Brooklands green",
elan-photos-f18/the-resurrection-4597-many-photos-and-some-text-t16846.html
both colors were the highest cost of any color that PPG offered at the time and I paid the auto body shop their cost for it. I got a good deal on it and if I remember it was $188 for a gallon of base coat there wasn't much left after it was sprayed, just enough for touch ups. My guess is you will need to fork out about400 gbp now, maybe a bit more. The Clear and reducer were extra my guess is 1000 gbp for just the materials (those are what the painter will pay), you will pay that and what ever the mark up is.

Dan,
Tim Wilkes website explains it as
A small protruding lip around the bottom of the rear valance appears to be a Sprint mould difference. S4 bodies do not have this lip and we can only assume that a new mould or part mould was used that resulted in this lip showing.

you can see it quite clearly in this picture:

Funny that was just thinking that I should paint the S4 red, the S2 blue and...well the s3 I really want is yellow, so bugger patriotism ;)

Nice photo Alan, John Whites is standing next to his ex Lotuis Europa Special (blue shirt) talking. Fosters Sprint is in foreground and the date is June 2002 I believe, I didn't know you were there, you should of stopped by and said hi :)

Gary,
That's the power of Google I'm afraid, I feel as though I was there, but only in spirit! That picture was from my archive of pictures titled "Don't do it like that one!", from when I was researching the best position for the sidewinder stripes on my S4. Just Google Lotus Elan and then choose images rather than websites and that picture comes up on the first page. I realised that it was probably a LOG meeting in the good ole USA, but I didn't know which one. I think the Sprint pictured comes under the heading of UNDER RESTORED as they obviously didn't have a clue how to fit the stripes and probably didn't research how it should be done.... pleased themselves obviously.

That's Foster Cooperstein's Sprint and he does know his S2s from his S4s! It's just that not everyone is as pedantic as you and me when it comes to stripes!

Tim,
There I go criticising someone else's pride and joy  Adam made it seem simple the way that he lined it all up from the front wing, but removal of the rear bumper is a must and perhaps is the mistake that most people make. I really like the colour mind you, it would have been my choice if I was allowed one.

I love the green you chose, Allan. Perfect for the character and liveliness of the Elan!

Randy,
Thanks for the thumbs up, it certainly isn't a colour for shrinking violets and we really get noticed. If I want a quick fill up at the petrol station it's best to go early morning otherwise there's people who want to talk cars just lining up, not that I mind that part in the slightest

Back on topic slightly; The seats, the door cards, the door frames, the rear lights are totally original to my S4 in that they were not refurbished or restored in any way apart from deep cleaning the vinyl and applying boot polish to the carpet on the door cards, the door frames have survived extremely well and it would have been a nonsense to re-plate them, the drivers seat is a bit worn where the squab meets the seatback, but they are both far too good to re-cover.

Kindest regards

Heh, Heh.

Just thought if Lotus had coded the cars like the resistor code then:

S1s would be brown
S2s would be red
S3s would be orange
S4s would be yellow

And Sprints which we might theoretically consider as S5s would be green.
